So I've purchased and exchanged 3 brand new surface pro 7s in the last 20 days from best buy because of this issue. Everytime I plugged in the charger, within 5 mins, the backside of the Surface pro 7 starts overheating to an uncomfortable temperature. This was the case for the last 2 Surface Pro 7s as well. Their respective lot number was 1945 and 1943. I'm beginning to wonder if this is an issue with this particular batch ... Is there any answers for this?

I have an update.
I never used cortana or activated it.
After disabling it from starting up and rebooting, this issue is now gone (for a week so far).
It would appear this is related to cortana doing something in the background when plugged into power.
Same issue to report. It feels random. Sometimes when I charge over night (with the original charger) when I wake up in the morning the unit is extremely hot AND it has not fully charged, it is at 76% or so. It was charging for 7 hours. It should not be at 76%. As soon as I take it off the charger, it begins cooling and is fine.
Also, latest updates installed. Default battery settings.
I had this too, I reinstalled windows 10 choosing to down load install and this resolved the issue.
I have to say that it became a lot better with the June or July bios update. It's really usable now. The problem with "USB device not recognized" when waking up with the USB-C docking station remains, but the heat and fan issue seems to be gone.
Important finding for me was that it went really hot when joined to Azure AD of my employer company, thus Intune policies gotten applied with Defender ATP, Qualys scanner and much more. This was killing the CPU.
I run it now joined to an Azure AD where I can control all settings without Defender ATP and other scanners and it's working really good now. Quiet, fast, good battery life.
Maybe you check with your virus / malware scanners and ensure you have the latest driver and bios updates from https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4023482/surface-download-drivers-and-firmware.
Give it a try and report back here, please.
Mine is always at 60C. Hopefully Microsoft will release some gloves with the surface pro because othewise I might have to return this unit too... At this point I'm considering just getting a normal laptop and getting over this disappointment.
