Wi-Fi connection control questions

Hi!

I have 2 question on Wi-Fi connection:

  1. Is it possible for US version of Surface RT to use European Wi-Fi channels 12, 13, when I'm in Europe?
  2. Is it possible to select exact Wi-Fi band to use (eg. n-only, bgn, bg, g-only)?

Sorry for the delayed response. Regulatory requirements vary from country to country and the Surface team strives to honor the legal requirements of all the countries we do business in. The Surface devices sold in your country have been designed to comply with the regulations of your particular country and/or region. This may prohibit the use of particular WiFi channels when traveling to countries or regions with differing regulatory requirements.

Hi all I had the same problem and changed the value of the channel from 12 to 6 in the wireless setting in my router and it worked fine

Now I can connect

Greetings Glen,

WiFi is configured differently on a country by country basis based on regulations and cannot be changed.

    Hi,

    this is what I did to enable channel 12+13 on a surface PRO:

    (may also work on a surface RT)

    This involves editing a setting in the registry.

    If you are not comfortable doing this ask someone for help.

    The issue is 802.11d is disabled by default. This helps the driver find out where it is and switch the channels on/off:

    IEEE 802.11d-2001 is an amendment to the IEEE 802.11 specification that adds support for "additional regulatory domains". This support includes the addition of a country information element to beacons, probe requests, and probe responses. The country information elements simplifies the creation of 802.11 wireless access points and client devices that meet the different regulations enforced in various parts of the world. The amendment has been incorporated into the published IEEE 802.11-2007 standard.

    1. Look for the device in the device manager

    You will find it under Network adapters, Marvell AVASTAR 350N Wireless Network Adapter

    1. Double Click to open the properties
    2. Click on the details tab
    3. In the Property dropdown select "Device class guid"

    Copy the value displayed {4d36e972-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

    1. In the Property dropdown select "Driver Key"

    In the value field you will see something like this:

    {4d36e972-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0012

    The number at the end (here 0012) varies! You need to remember this number

    1. Now open regedit

    Easy way:

    Press WinKey+R and type "regedit" + Enter

    Answer the security question with YES

    1. In the edit menu use Find
    2. Copy the key {4d36e972-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318} into the menu, deselect value s and data and let regedit find this.

    The result will be under HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class{4d36e972-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

    1. Expand the tree and look for the entry with the number I asked you to remember (in my case 12).
    2. Then expand that and in the right pane look for  "EnableDot11d". Change the setting from 0 to 1.
    3. Repeat the search and it will come up again under:

    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4d36e972-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

    1. Make the same change (I honestly don't know if one change does it or not, I made both and it worked)

    Now reboot and you should find those missing networks!
