Thanks Barb, but no improvement.  Since I normally use from a docking station I hadn't noticed how bad this has gotten.  I did the battery re-sync procedure and again replaced battery driver.  Charged to 100% and kept a spreadsheet of time and battery remaining.  At 30 minutes light usage (browsing), with somewhere around 50% battery life left it just suddenly DIES with no notice.

This is my second Surface and frankly I love the product.  I've recommended and purchased them for the executive teams at our companies.  Most love being free from heavier laptops.  However, it simply won't do to have the devices fail with no easy battery replacement every other year with battery life degrading throughout.  I can't even use on a plane now since I think the battery would fail before we even depart the gate.  Not to mention, the sudden failure leaves me likely to lose work.  Even more troubling is that given the number of people reporting a problem this appears to be widespread and Microsoft doesn't appear to be addressing the issue unless they are doing so privately one on one.  I'm not sure how I can continue to support the product if Microsoft won't support the users.  Really stinks since I'm truly not sure what other device comes close....I guess I'll start looking since it's time for end of year purchases/replacements.

I gave up months ago. It was a very positive decision, and I urge those of you still in this thread to do so. Move forward. 

I’ve quickly grown used to macOS, and find it superior in many ways. A combination of iPads and MacBooks are not only working for me at this point, but for everyone in my unit: I made the call last year in November and we have now finished upgrading a sizable population. While two or three individuals are holding onto their Surface units, It has been a very popular decision and one which has positively affected our productivity.

I realize not everyone has the ability to reform their work unit and move them away from this broken Surface ecosystem. However, for those of you worried about walking away from this model of computer or Windows operating system in general, do it if you can. I look forward to a much less stressful 2020, working with a much more responsive company.

the main problem seems to be the docking station. 

I paid 3000 GBP for a 1Tb Surface Pro 5. It worked well for less than 2 years.

The greatest piece of IT junk I have ever bought. 

Here is the list of problems you will encounter with a surface Pro:

-the keyboard is not rigid; you would never think it is a problem until you try to use the SP has a laptop and you can't perch it on your lap

-you will not be able to plug in more than one USB peripheral at a time, even when you using the docking station. There does not seem to be enough power to make more than one peripheral run. 

-the docking station will keep on charging the battery until the battery is destroyed. Oh well done, that is a most useful docking station.

-connecting an external monitor will be difficult and the table/Laptop may or may not recognise the monitor depending on the day, the hour, the month, in fact, it is unpredictable. I was using a DELL 32 inch monitor, works perfectly well with any other computer.

The weirdest thing that happened with the SP5 is that one day, staying in a very nice hotel by the sea in Portugal, the flappy keyboard and the arc mouse stopped responsding. There was somehow an interference from the hotel fridge (under the desk) that was upsetting them. A keyboard affected by a fridge? yes, that does smack of a bad design.

The worst thing was of course the battery. it was down to about 30 min autonomy. I went to the Microsoft shop on Oxford Street (London) and asked for a repair. I was told that was not possible because of the way the tablet/laptop is designed, but for the price of a new battery they upgraded the SP5 to and SP6 on the spot. That was not bad I suppose. At least I am saved the embarassment of putting this junk in the bin. It might have a few more years as a toy for some undemanding child.

Yes, that is Microsoft hardware for you: junk.

Do not buy a Microsoft PC is my new rule. Let others waste their cash. Back to DELL/HP...even the Chinese do better.

Hello Henri, so sorry to see you are experiencing the same but pleased to see you agree with what I have said and it's not just me having a moan. It really is disgraceful isn't it. Microsoft are a very big name and I spend time defending it with other creatives who steadfastly champion Apple as being the only computer for the creative industry. I am beginning to regret my devotion to Microsoft and if they can't put this right for us it will be difficult to continue my evangelism. Do you happen to know if anyone from Microsoft consumer complaints dept. or maybe their PR dept. monitor this forum and are in any kind of position to respond to us positively? If not, any idea how we can reach the right people at Microsoft to at least have someone to discuss the issue with? Oh, I just read your previous posts Henri! Looks like the answer to my second question is no.

How the heck are we supposed to get to anyone at Microsoft to get a response.

I have to also agree with your previous post - unless we can get any satisfactory response, I will join you and never ever buy any more Microsoft computers again. I also use Dell and they are amazing in comparison.

I totally agree with you. This was my first time acquiring (as a gift) an expensive, high performance computer and I was blown away by the improved quality of the experience. I felt I could never go back to a "lower quality" computer. Now, less than three years later, my "high quality" and very expensive computer is nearly useless to me while my former, now "back up" computer (7 years old) still runs like a charm -- albeit with a fuzzy screen, slow speed, plastic encasing, heavy weight, etc. But at least it works! 

And to make Microsoft's complete silence and lack of retribution or even acknowledgment of this situation, they are currently offering a buyback program in exchange for the purchase of a new Surface. But guess what??? Our precise model is the only one not included on the list of computers they offer to buy back. Hmmm. Go figure!!! No that is a total slap in the face. We will sell you a defective machine. Never respond to your questions or desperate complaints about it, and publicly announce that we are well aware of your problem by excluding you and your defective machine that you paid a lot of money for from our buy back program. I had thought that buying from Microsoft was a guarantee of quality and superior service. I've learned my lesson. Does anyone out there know if there is any legal action that we could take against them? Just to obtain a replacement computer, or at the least to force them to fix the problem on the computers we already have.
