Hello,
I just wonder if some of you who own this version of Surface Pro have the same issues like mine as in below:
ISSUE: Battery at full charge drastically degraded and swingsConditions observed lately:-The battery runs out within 1-2 hrs just by browsing websites/Youtube (tested on both Chrome&M. Edge)
-To fully Charge, takes only around 20-30mins (Est. full charge not accurate)
-Battery sometimes drops by a ridiculous amount E.G. by 20-30% in 1 sec. After checked with Battert Report run in CMDAt Designed Cap at : 45,000,
My Full Charge history as below (Noted that i tried to reset the windows and all previous history is gone so this is what i remember)
First bought (Jan,2018)
Full Charge 2018 : around 40,000 0 44,000
Full Charge 2019(Early months) : Starting to drop to 35,000
Full Chrage as of the last few months : 25,000
Full charge as the last few days of notice: Swings from 22,000 to 9,000 life cycles at 383
Now i cant use it outside without charger. This is very frustating while working**.**
As my device is out of warranty, after searching online, the onl way is replacement at 500USD which seems ridiculus to me just because of battery. I bought this expensive device for the reason of long-term use. this is just a year and a half. Shouldn't it last for 4-5 years for its price?
If you have the same issues and any solutions/suggestions, feel free to share and discuss.
**Update 1 8/19/19:**I can't turn on. I lost my files those i didn't back up. I don't have any other computer to use.
Update 2 8/22/19: I just bought a new PC just to work. I cant wait for 1-2 weeks (Send to another country as there's no microsoft HQ in Thailand) and spend 500USD for just battery replacement.
I kinda gave up and thought it was my fault back then. Now, if you have the same problems. Please up vote.
Update 3 9/1/19:
Seems like my battery is completely dead after testing at a computer shop.
Conclusion:
I am not a hardcore user. In less than 400 cycles, battery (all 4 cells) is dead.
The battery life of my surface pro lasted less than 2 years.
That means you have to pay 500 USD every 2 years. (Could have used this money to upgrade lol)
Maybe 2 in 1 tablets/laptops are not ready for practical use.
Maybe other brands are geting better.
Why do we have to refurbish/replace the device for just a battery which shouldn't cost more than 50 USD.
P.S.
For those who cant even turn the device on,
It's either the circuit is broken duee to defect/unfunctional battary
OR
The battery is completely dead
Worst case = both.

Same issue here. Purchased Dec. 2017. So under 3.5 years old. Generally keep the Surface 5 powered up on dock 24/7. Rarely use on battery except when traveling which is just a few times a year.
About a week or two ago, I shut down the machine, but instead of shutting down it went to blue screen and died there. Needed a hard shut down. When I went to do that I noticed the unit was REALLY hot.
Last night I needed to use it on battery. Probably used for about 1.5 hours and did soft shut down. Icon was showing 50% power left.
Tried to turn on this morning. NOTHING.
Plugged into dock. NOTHING.
Plugged into charger, started and showed 3% battery
Battery report shows nearly 50% loss in capacity since January of this year. It is now end of May..
48,370 mWh to 28,867 mWh

Bought a surface in 2018/09, end of warranty by 2019/09.
After the first year I already saw the degraded battery, battery would hold a good 5-6 normal usage. Kinda expected with all those battery issue with other generations and current.
Note: I was using my surface docking station almost 90% of the time.
2 month's ago: Still using my surface as a daily driver, battery last 1 hour maximum but still good performance.
Today:
- The surface docking wont power up the surface, my surface only works with the original power supply.
- If i disconnect my charger, it power's off the device
- The worst pas is the surface performance dropped
- Full charge Capacity at : 14,700 mWh, cycle count 197.
I refuse to pay 450$ USD (650 cad) to recieve a "new refurbished device" surface with no warranty ( 90 days only ) which might last a year or too.
Not only this feels like a scam, but it's a RIP OFF.
We are giving them 1200$ device + 500$ , so that they give you another refurbished device. They might as well just take our returned devices, change the battery, and send those to people who request a replacement device.
I thought by buying "microsoft" brand to make it a "premium device", hell no...and we probably invested 300$+ worth of surface accesories
( pen, keyboard, docking...)
Anyways, rant over...never trusting microsoft devices anymore. Bad support, lame diagnostics tools, no way of having an autorized "repair shop" fix your surface.
Agree there is absolutely no support. I was tempted to buy a Surface Pro X but MS attitude is driving me away. I just need to find a replacement with detachable keyboard.

When the Surface battery gets really low & won't recharge (ie. it's needs replacing) the CPU gets stuck/throttled into a reduced speed of 0.38 GHz, hence the poor performance. Install ThrottleStop and disable BD PROCHOT and your Surface will be usable again, although it won't turbo-up to 3.4 GHz.
On restarting or turning on first thing, you'll have to suffer a slow boot into login and onto the desktop, but then you can immediately load ThrottleStop and the CPU speed will be better.
Sometimes my Surface Pro 2017 suddenly recognises it has a battery (albeit a worn one), attempts to charge it and the next restart the CPU is back to normal without needing ThrottleStop. Then if the Surface hibernates due to the bad battery, the CPU once again gets throttled.
I don't know if it's a firmware issue or Windows 10 issue as users of other manufacturer's laptops have reported a similar problem.
