Battery Drains While Shutdown

I have read many posts and made many attempts to correct this problem without any success.

I was traveling for 3 months and when I returned the battery was completely dead.

Also, each night since my return, the battery drains as much as 12% overnight while shutdown.

I have all MS updates but the problem continues.

Please advise.

    Thanks Barb, I have watched the video of changing one of those batteries and even though I am fairly familiar with the inside of a computer, I don't think it is actually user replaceable.

    The authorized service mentioned in the specifications is something I have no experience with.  I suppose I will look for such a place and see how much they charge. 

    I seem to have the impression a system swap is the preferred method.  I would not be willing to "swap" one of my systems so that option is off the table.

    Same problem.  Frustrating - 33% battery drain per day.  It's impossible to shut down this tablet and not have the battery be dead in 2.5 days.

    I agree with you, dh055, that it would be good to alert comp. journals, Consumer Rep., etc. about the issue.

    A comment on one of the statements made above about that it's normal for a battery to discharge after 300+ cycles - this is not true. Modern Li-ion batteries are designed to keep ca. 80% of their initial charge after 1000 cycles - my MBPs from 2009 and 2010 have proven this to be true (they still work and when off, the battery charge does not drop like with Surface Pros). Also, I have a ThinkPad X230 that is 5 years old (original battery) and I've tested it after I noticed the problem with my SP4 - when it's off, the battery does not discharge. Thus, the issue with SP batteries is either a battery-related problem (manufacturing/design error) or a SP assembly related problem (short-circuiting?).
