I have read many posts and made many attempts to correct this problem without any success.
I was traveling for 3 months and when I returned the battery was completely dead.
Also, each night since my return, the battery drains as much as 12% overnight while shutdown.
I have all MS updates but the problem continues.
Please advise.

my device is out of warranty :(
I took my device to Microsoft and they exchanged it for a new device. If the issue continues with the new device I will be seeking a full refund.
All well and good if your device is in the warranty period - myself and most others this issue happens a few months out of warranty. (3 months for me)
Then we're left with just an expensive drinks tray.
