I finally quit trying and called support.  They said to go back to the Microsoft store and there has to be at least one with the proper hardware id.  I did this and the first tech I got this time actually had seen this pop up on a few different machines he had updated.  He went to the back, pulled out another device for me and felt confident it had the proper hardware id.  And sure enough, it did!  Now I'm all updated and running just fine.  I can finally use the Surface Hub app.  Good looking out Microsoft!

Oh, and do you even try the reboots when it fails the initial time. Or do you just go back in and delete the driver, etc. immediately after you see it fails?

Guess ill just keep repeating the, procedure above until I go to sleep. Lol. This a last ditch effort before I return it and demand they go through each of their devices until one works. I really need the surface hub functionality. Thanks again for all your input too James B 81.

As mentioned in the last few posts, switching to a different keyboard doesn't work, the surface hub software doesn't work properly, and I believe a few other misc. issues.

kwill34 - what worked for me was the following:

Go to the Surface Pro Touch Controller Firmware in device manager and right click and choose uninstall - check the box for "delete driver package" or whatever it is called and click OK...  Then scan for hardware changes - it will redetect as "device firmware".  Then run windows update and it will detect that you need a firmware update.  Download/install as normal and it'll tell you that you need to reboot.  When it reboots it will try and install the firmware - if it is successful it will take 3-5 minutes (or more) to install and then boot to windows and device manager will no longer show any yellow exclamations for that device.  If it fails the status bar will only go about 20% across the screen and then the Surface will reboot.  It usually tries 2-3 times and then gives up and reboots to windows with the yellow exclamation.

I just kept doing the above process over and over again (probably 50+ times on my last Surface device) and eventually it installed the firmware update.

The other option is to return it or wait for a fix.

    -James
