Many prior posts implicate a drained battery, particularly among the older Surface Pros.  I have a Surface 5, i7 7660U/Iris 640.  So the current fix appropriate for the Surface 7 won't/doesn't work for me.  I've purchased a new battery and am waiting for the appropriate moment to install it.  Will let you know whether that cures my problem.

Incidentally, the only thing which appears to resolve the issue immediately for me is detaching/reattaching the type cover, which has the effect of resetting the USB bus over which the type cover communicates.  In the older models, there is likely a problem with the USB bus driver which causes the graphics card to believe (wrongly) that the user is attempting to switch from using the trackpad to the touch screen.  I note that, while the trackpad is not working, the touch screen/pen work fine.  Getting back to using the trackpad, however, mostly requires the detach/reattach trick.  But often, before this becomes "mandatory", I can relieve the issue momentarily (depending on the active application), by hitting the ESC and right-click keys, or the ESC and DEL keys, in rapid succession.  Why?  It's a mystery.  Probably all a USB bus driver issue between the type cover and the system, at least in the older models.

Did you try the fix I posed in the post above yours?  It has worked for many.

This is just a ridiculous lack of response from Microsoft. It is absolutely unacceptable that they've been receiving customer reports for 2 years and have done NOTHING. No replies, no solutions, nothing except telling people to reinstall windows or update drivers (which doesn't solve anything btw). I love the surface pro, but this is unacceptable for me. It's way too expensive to have this kind of flaw. I won't be buying any more Microsoft hardware because of this, and I want them to know that they're losing a customer here because of their utter incompetence.

I don't have anything new to add to the other responses, but I am reporting my case anyway to maybe increase the chance of someone at Microsoft doing something about this.

I have the seemingly random sticky trackpad on a Surface Pro 2017 with a signature type cover (actually my second one, because I returned the first one thinking it was a malfunction with the type cover, only to become extremely disappointed when I discovered it wasn't...). For me, the issue only occurs when the tablet is plugged in. I tried some of the solutions suggested here and none worked for me (except using the Surface on battery power, but I don't even consider that a solution).
