I mainly use the surface pro 7 with the same specs as you for school. I use office products and the internet like you and I get over seven hours. Now with regards to zoom calls I am not familiar how that affects the battery life of the product but I would recommend this. I disabled any background apps that I didn't need running. I disabled Cortana and new notifications. I lower my brightness down fifty percent and below with windows dark theme on along with a dark desktop background. Moreover, I have battery saver on at all times unless I have to run some engineering software that I have on my computer. If you've tried all of these steps try to replace your device or get a refund. I got my surface on Christmas and I pray sometime soon in the future Microsoft gets this battery issue fixed so that I can run on better performance for a longer period of time.
How is your battery life on the Surface Pro 7?
I upgraded to the Surface Pro 7 - 8gb, 256GB from the SP4 8gb, 256GB. My SP4 hardly got an hour of battery and would shut off on battery without warning, so I constantly had it plugged into the wall wherever I went. I was hoping for much better on the SP7. Currently I am struggling to get a full 5 hours...closer to 4 hours.
Yes, I know I use Chrome and Edge, a number of Office windows open, might watch some YouTube and Netflix.
4 to 5 hours seems pathetically small.
Any other comments, suggestions or comparisons? (I know there's a need to 'bed in' a new battery in, I've had the laptop almost 2 weeks now, the battery should be 'bedding' in by now.
thanks in advance

2021-02-19T17:16:49+00:00 New surface pro 7 user here (i5, 8gb ram, 256gb)
I'm lucky to get 3 hours out of the battery at the moment. Just average use, browsing, office and some zoom calls.
Ran all the updates, driver updates and power saving settings but very disappointed with the battery aspect so far.
Using a type cover so might try without that for a while

-no touch screen,
-no pen support,
-no 2-in-1 design,
-no 180-degree screen,
-no MicroSD slot,
-poorer screen resolution than SP7
(2560x1600 at 227 pixels to 2736x1824 at 267 pixels)
-no 1080p webcam,
-no face recognition,
-no number pad,
-Shaq size trackpad and palm rest
-keyboard issues
-green screen issues
-history of overheating
-history of thermal throttling
-class-action lawsuits every year, including 2020
-twice as many malware attacks as Windows devices
As for M1 chip, battery life is FINALLY on par with the best Windows laptops that have most of the above positives and none of the longstanding problems: www.laptopmag.com/articles/all-day-strong-longest-lasting-notebooks
