Hi Everyone,

Has anyone been seeing intermittent Event 4101 "Display driver igfxn stopped responding and has successfully recovered" on surface laptop 3?

Tried all the surface diagnostics tools - all clean. Uninstalled device, reinstalled. - no joy.

Not had the laptop that long so not sure if updating to the latest surface firmware is the cause.

Not sure where to go from here. It happen maybe once every few days of constant use - very brief display blanking then recovers.

Is this a driver issue with the latest intel build? Or hardware issue? Nothing else wrong with the laptop.

I also saw this huge set of updates after reading your reply. As of after installing the updates I haven't seen a glitch either. Let's keep our fingers crossed and not cheer too early. I'll keep on following this thread.

It was premature indeed. I managed to work until the early afternoon and then it popped up again. :-(

Mine's going back to the shop on Monday.

Another Surface Laptop 3 with the same problem.

I checked device manager and the following items under the firmware section had exclamation marks:

    Surface Keyboard

    Surface ME

    Surface RETIMER

    Surface System Aggregator

    Surface UEFI

Installing the latest firmware from MS fixed the exclamation marks but not the display issues.

I am not sure who is to blame MS or Intel for the display driver.

Company CEO has a Pro 7 and is also complaining about display issues. He said we must find another vendor as, in our limited experience, they are not stable enough for business use. We only have 4 surface devices and 2 of them have issues. Simply unsatisfactory.

SHP_Group - This is 100% an intel problem - our company purchased some AMD version of the same product and zero problems. ALLof our intel machine exhibited the same 4101 display problem. I'm begining to wonder if this is an underlying issue with the Intel Ice lake products.

Anyway, I'm the author of the original post raising this issue way back in  March I think. I have manage to "solve" the problem but I'm not 100% sure which of my fixes did the trick:

    - run sfc /scannow (as administrator) .

We havent had an occurrance in over 7 weeks since these fixes were put in place. Glad thats the case but shouldnt have need to do this (and without the help of Microsoft) who haven't been any use to be honest.

    Hi Carlo_GLA,

Many Thanks for your reply. I had read that disabling the panel refresh and office H/W acceleration had helped but it does not seem to have helped in our case. I also installed the latest Intel driver but I will try exactly the version you mentioned to see if this is the magic combo! (and sfc /scanow)

    Thanks again!
