Surface Laptop 3 - Event 4101 "Display driver igfxn stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

Hi Everyone,

Has anyone been seeing intermittent Event 4101 "Display driver igfxn stopped responding and has successfully recovered" on surface laptop 3? 

Tried all the surface diagnostics tools - all clean. Uninstalled device, reinstalled. - no joy. 

Not had the laptop that long so not sure if updating to the latest surface firmware is the cause. 

Not sure where to go from here. It happen maybe once every few days of constant use - very brief display blanking then recovers. 

Is this a driver issue with the latest intel build? Or hardware issue? Nothing else wrong with the laptop.

    Maybe it is the "hardware acceleration" yes, I use Microsoft Outlook and Google Chrome and both use hardware acceleration.

    Sometimes, when I use ALT+TAB, my screen does not response and becomes black one or two seconds before to comes back ok.

    I use last Intel graphic driver and from some months, I no longer have issue with Zoom or other video application like at the beginning but I am using a USB-C to DisplayPort cable, I have to retry the USB-C to USB-C graphic cable to check if my issue with video application is always present or not.

    My issues:

    • Screen does not response, become black and come back up
    • With application video (Zoom, VLC with DirectX output) artefacts and flickering

    Fixes / Workarounds :

    • Use last Intel Graphic driver
    • Use USB-C to DisplayPort cable instead of USB-C to USB-C cable
    • Disable/Enable DisplayPort 1.2 in screen configuration (Daisy Chain)
    • Configure laptop to use the power mode "best performance"
    • Disable hardware acceleration in Windows 10 or Outlook/Chrome/...

    I have the same exact issue with my new surface laptop 3 bough 2 weeks ago.

    I just tried to he "Disable hardware acceleration" from Outlook. Let's see whether that helps.

    At first  thought that this is a software problem, but considering that it's not a super widespread issue (I think on reddit virtually nobody is reporting this), I assume that this is either a CPU or graphics chip hardware problem, particularly as disabling hardware acceleration pretty much solves this problem. I also notice that it's more frequently, when I have quite a few apps open and quickly switch between them.

    So, I'll be returning mine asap and I'd agree that Surface devices are completely inadequate for business use, particularly with that service.

    One other thing I just remembered - ensure when plugged in you have pushed the power settings to 'high'

    Hi Carlo_GLA,

    Many Thanks for your reply. I had read that disabling the panel refresh and office H/W acceleration had helped but it does not seem to have helped in our case. I also installed the latest Intel driver but I will try exactly the version you mentioned to see if this is the magic combo! (and sfc /scanow)
