Surface Pro 5 fan stops working after installing firmware update

Hi

I have a Surface Pro 2017, i7, 8GB, 256 but in recent month the fan is not turning on in any working condition. previously I can heard easily the sound of the fan but now its not turn on anyway.

    The fan isn't controlled by drivers, it's controlled at hardware/firmware level independently from the operating system.

    Try opening a few browsers with https://www.wirple.com/bmark/, this should produce enough heat for the fans to start. If it doesn't, then the temperature sensors could have been permanently affected.

    I was running my surface outside in the mexico (33*Celcius), and the surface cpu tempuratureguage was running at a constant 70-90*C.

    The fan did not turn on, unfortunately.

    So I'm guessing my surface pro is temperature sensors are fried.

    Not much I can do now since the device is out of warranty.

    By any chance, do you have your power settings set to Best Battery Life? Just click on the battery indicator and move the slider all the way to the right. Also perform a complete shutdown to make sure there is no residual effect from the bad firmware. You should hear a faint humming when putting your ear next to the air grill at the side of the device.

    I would appeal to Microsoft to make an exception, as we essentially helped testing their firmware quality, it would have been so much more damaging if it were to be released to all users...

    I suggested them to send a SP6 to replace my overheated SP5 as a compensation for 3 months of reduced productivity, however Support doesn't do long term thinking that well... will they blame anyone from applying past experiences when ordering new hardware for colleagues...

    33 degrees does sound better than the 9 degrees here in NL ;-)

    Actually, the fan started to work again, but as you previously noted, it only starts at a very high temperature, and the battery drops at about 1% every 2 minutes.

    I'm still running dual rear fans on my surface pro to keep it cool.

    But as you said, a replacement SP6 would be great, considering this unfortunate fan issue.

    What is your average operating temperature with a fan?
