Surface Pro 3 Slow WiFi - 72Mbps Max (driver)

I have an Apple Airport Extreme 802.11ac wireless router at home and am only connecting at a max of speed of 72Mbps (usually closer to 11Mbps if I'm more than 20 feet away from the WAP). I have two other 802.11ac laptops at home (Samsung AB9+ and rMBP) and my two other computers are connecting up at 800Mbps+ and pulling down the same on Internet speed tests; yes, I have real GigE connectivity. Is anyone else having these problems?

    Those of you with issues of slow 72Mbps--

    1. brand and model of router
    2. are the SSID's for 2.4GHz and 5 GHz the same?
    3. If yes to above, does specifying a unique name for 5GHz and connecting to

    that improve your experience?

    Quickly looking through these many posts, I'm wondering if there is a pattern of

    broadcom chip (or maybe others) wifi routers that have this "smart select/smart

    connect" technology out of the box.

    I always thought that the SSID for both bands had to be different. That's in the way I always had it. In my case, 5G is not reliable. But I think it's a router issue.

    Nope, they don't have to be different. Apple has had them the same for years.

    Other vendors are now doing this. Here's what Netgear states:

    "Smart Connect intelligently selects the best WiFi band for each dual-band

    device to optimize connection speed and performance based on that device’s speed

    and performance. The router automatically manages your WiFi connections,

    performing load balancing across the two 5 GHz radios. This additional WiFi

    bandwidth combined with the intelligence to segregate traffic based on WiFi

    speed and load balancing provides the best performance for multiple WiFi devices

    in the home."

    I also think there is an issue that impacts certain routers with certain

    chipsets. There was a time, circa 2006, when some Marvell based chipset routers

    had a lot of issues with non Marvell based clients as compared to say broadcom.

    I remember (vaguely) having a Netgear router at that time that was afflicted

    with this issue and they fixed it with router firmware.

    As I recall, for some reason, you need to use the lower bands as opposed to the higher ones on

    the 5GHz side (can't remember why) -- where for most people, the upper bands give a better experience.
