Surface Pro 3 Slow WiFi - 72Mbps Max (driver)

I still have not had the overheat issue.  For the fan, I reported it was obvious during the updates and initial synching of Dropbox, but since then, I have not hear it much.  The top right is warm but that is it.

I was traveling yesterday and used it throughout the day.  even streamed some slingbox and watch an avi movie and the fan did not come on.

I did order the nano usb wifi adapter and should have that later today.  Less than $10 on amazon.

I also turned of chrome in the background.  I have had issues with that in the past on other systems.

I tried disabling the connected standby as mentioned by another user. That didn't work at all, WiFi issues are still present. What I did notice was that WiFi works fine as long as I have 3+ bars of signal on the surface 3. All other devices work fine in at 20-30m from the router but at least the surface 3 works within 10-15 meters of the router. After that distance the surface pro 3's speed drops to 1mbps.

Tried going back to BB to see if they knew anything but kept getting exchange/return as I am within 15 days of buying it. The employees there said I was the first in complaining about WiFi issues or any issues at all.

In regards to the fan heating up, the surface 3 tends to get hot with the most basic apps. (e.g. Mahjong, Frozen) By hot I mean warm enough to make you reposition your hand. The warm/hot area is the same as the others, behind the right side and a little bit above the windows button.

so the way to install the wifi adapter, download the driver via internet to the hard drive, the disable the Wi-Fi via charms bar, then run the installation you downloaded and when asked say to have the Tp-Link software manage the WiFi connection, not the windows network manager.  And that is all.

Then we just wait and see when Microsoft releases a patch.

I wonder if those with issues are using IPv6. I have found less issues if I disable it in my Asus Router. Again, I'm not proposing any solution, I'm just trying to find the cause.

Frank, there shouldn't be an issue with IPv6, provided there are no strange bugs in the router. I know various vendors working on various IPv6 bugs, but speed should not be an issue.

I'm got it configured using 6to4 tunnel. Do you have any guide about how to configure it without 6to4? It I use the native setting this page tests fail http://test-ipv6.comcast.net/

If in fact , the problem is connected standby, and I suspect you are correct, Mosoft has a big problem with these units, but it's not a Microsoft Problem and it's not a Wifi Problem, it's an Intel Problem.  Connected standy works flawlessly on Atom Powered devices that go back two chip generations.  Instant On, Instant Off - Always connected in a low power state.  On my Clover Trail Tablet, when close the cover, the tablet sleeps instantly - When I open the cover it lights up instantly - and every thing is up to date.  That's not the case with my SP3 - I have to bang keys and press the power switch to get it to turn on after any length of sleep.

I have an SP2 with a Haswell i5 and 8GB Ram, but no connected standby because connected standby was never supported in the Core iX Haswell Architecture.   For the SP3 - Intel tweaked the Core i3,5 & 7 to provide connected standby functionality.  This tweak is where I think the problem must be.

The fact that MS has been so silent on this is completely unacceptable and inexcusable but I suspect there is a a hardware flaw at chip level and the symptom shows up in the WiFi because of connected standby hardware issues.

If my theory is correct Intel, doesn't know to fix it, so a recall will do nothing.  No Driver is going to fix this one and MS Needs Intel to fix it because it's not a Marvel Network adapter Problem, it's not a driver problem, it's an Intel Processor problem.........

Has anyone narrowed the wifi problem down to a particular SP3 model?  I have the 512gb i7 model relesed 01 August, and after setting my router to broadcast a 5ghz SSID I have had absolutely no wifi isuses.  866.5mbps connection, no drops, no standby issues, etc...  So, apparently there are cases where the SP3 is working correctly, with tweaks to other devices (i.e. router config). 

A general poll to readers to narrown down model and manufacture/production period:

What's your SP3 model...and what month did you receive it?

Mine:  SP3, 512gb hdd, 8gb ram, i7.......received August 04, 2014......no longer having wifi issues
