Surface Pro 3 Slow WiFi - 72Mbps Max (driver)

Hi,

I've been using a surface pro on 2.4ghz and 5ghz wireless N networks for a few months. Performance and stability have improved with the updates and I now get similar performance to my other devices & pcs; which is a good start!

However, we've recently switched to a new set of access points which provide 2.4ghz G & N access as well as 5ghz N & AC access. All the networks/bands have the same SSID and this cannot be changed, the client should choose which band/speed to use.

Unfortunately, my surface connects to the 2.4ghz N (& sometimes G) exclusively. It never connects using AC.

Is there any way to get AC wifi speeds when both the AC and N networks have the same SSID? Surely this is quite a common scenario?

Can you share the brand and model of your router please? Do you know if there

are any 5 GHz cordless phones in your vicinity and have you experimented with

different 5 GHz channels?

We have a TP-LINK TL-WDR3600 Dual Band Wireless N600 Router. We don't have a cordless phone, but we live in an apartment building with many neighbors so there may be neighbors close to us that do. Haven't played around with different channels for the 5 ghz band. We have several other wireless devices in the apartment that never have these kind of issues so I know it's not a channel problem. But if the Surface behaves better with one channel over another than I guess it's worth some experimentation. 

It would be worth trying different channels to rule out interference as a first step.

The 2.4Ghz link is still slower than it should be (based on other devices using the same SSID) but it works now. I have about a dozen SP3s at work that I'm going to upgrade and then test with Cisco 3501 APs. These are 2.4Ghz 802.11N access points. I'll let you know what I find next week.
