Surface Pro 1 on Windows 8.1 reboots when Type Cover 2 is removed

I just noticed this recently but sometimes I get a Random reboot not even doing anything particular. I also noticed twice that when I attached my Type Cover 2 it reboots.  Example I attached it and the SURFACE logo shows and it boots up.

Anyone else experiencing this.?

I've been having the same issue.  Never happened when Windows 8 was installed.

I have had 8.1 installed since it's availability and has only started this restarting over the past month.  It happens when removing and attaching my type cover - also version one.

I factory restored my device a couple of days ago and I'm still having the issue.

I was speaking to an MS representative today and he has logged it and said people should start investigating it very soon.  Hopefully a couple of weeks for them to find a resolution.

I'm contemplating taking it back to John Lewis and seeing if they will replace it with a Surface Pro 2 (as this is my second replacement, however for a different reason).  So if I was to take it back it would be my third.

I'm experimenting by not using the type cover and using my wedge Bluetooth keyboard and seeing if the issue happens.  I don't think it will.  I know there was an system update applied on the 10th of this month - I'm wondering if it's related to the firmware upgrade.  Really don't know - just wish it wouldn't do this as it's irritating especially if you are doing something productive.

It's very strange that there is nothing helpful in the event viewer.

Anyway, I will update you if I hear anything back from Microsoft.

I just had another one this morning.  Surface Pro, Touch Cover 1, sitting stably on table, not plugged in. I was just reading a webpage in the Metro IE and using my left index finger to 'scroll' by a slow swipe when the screen went blank...then reboot.  Event viewer shows the aforementioned Critical 'shutdown without restart' Kernel power error (41, task category 63).  Battery level is about 65% as I type this.  Surface is sitting on a nonconductive placemat, but it's rainy here today so humidity is reasonable...no reason to think I static-shocked it (I do think many other reported issues with things like microSD cards dismounting, etc. could be poor grounding issues with the chassis).

There are about 25 of these in my log.  3 from the same day in April, one from July...these might have been when I was having issues trying to get a reset for the stuck Windows button, or just let the battery die.  The remaining 21 are all from about mid-October until the present, after the October update.

Definitely something software, and definitely something 8.1.

As CSCIGuy said....sigh.  Slowly turning my very high satisfaction with the Surface Pro 1 initially (even with the Wacom pressure-sensitivty driver issues) into just hope that it last long enough I won't feel like a total chump when I replace it...which as of today would not be with the Pro 2, based on present experience.  I've actually got the yellow glue-line thing going on either edge of the touchscreen too, and have been tempted to go with a warranty replacement (bought the 2 year 'complete' plan) but it will still end up costing me about $400 in licensed software tied to this serial number that I probably can't get Adobe etc. to 'rehost' to the replacement.

    Get it together, please.

Got a reboot today. It has been awhile but all I did was remove my Wireless Adapter from the Type cover and snap it back on to the surface and boom. The SURFACE logo showed up.

    SIGH

Good news.  After chatting with a Surface support rep, they have recognized the random reboot issue.  The rep told me that there is currently a fix in the works and they hope for a quick release.

Unfortunately, the keyboard issues may not be related, as it sounds like this fix only targets the reboot issue.

I've spoken to the support before too and then gotten the email. Been in limbo since. I hope they were telling you the truth but considering Surface Pro 2 Firmware update which is failing has been yanked and will be updated after the holidays.

Thank you for the feedback. It helps us all know what is going on.

I can report the same with my Surface Pro with Type Cover 1. However, I will notice some patterns that could help diagnose this:

When I have the Surface Pro sitting on my desk (e.g. not moving around), it is rock-solid - no reboots, no keyboard problems, no sleep or power issues (pulling in from other threads on this...). In other words, as long as I don't start moving around with my Surface Pro, it is perfectly fine. I work for hours at a time at my desk with never a problem.

But when I pick it up and go portable (like a good tablet), I see the issues that others have:

    • Problems with my Type Cover 1 - keyboard unresponsive, trackpad unresponsive. If I unplug the Type Cover and snap it back then it usually restores.
    • Random reboots - usually when I think the Surface Pro was put in sleep mode. When I start to use it again it I get the Surface logo. A couple of times when I have snapped my Type Cover on it reboots.
    • Sleep mode - several times I thought my Surface Pro was in sleep mode, it was actually running. I never hear the fan, and actually the unit doesn't run warm like it usually does. But something is clearly draining the battery.

    Help!

    Skip

A complete copy of my experiences.

Come on Microsoft. This you could do better.

    Regards

    Svein
