Surface Pro7 Frequent Errors and Blue Screen Problems

Dear Microsoft Community,

A week ago I bought a brand-new Surface Pro 7. I am a big Surface fan and was very excited to use my new device for the purpose of my studies.

My system configuration is a Surface Pro 7 with an Intel® Core™ i5 – 1034G4 CPU, 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD.

I updated Windows 10 to the most recent version and, so far, did not install third-party software on the device. I connected an original Microsoft Surface Pen and a Microsoft Surface Type Cover. No other hardware was connected.

During the usage I soon experienced very frequent Blue Screens and restarts as a result. These Blue Screens happened in tablet mode as well as in desktop mode. As the problems with Blue Screens became so frequent that I was unable to use the device for my everyday work, and their stop codes did not even allow me to trace back the actual error, I became very frustrated.

In the attached pictures I documented a use scenario, where I used my Surface Pro 7 with normal (office and Microsoft Edge surfing) workload. Within this 45 minutes use case scenario, I encountered 6 Blue Screens (1:01; 1:05; 1:11; 1:23; 1:26; and 1:38 pm), all with different stop codes.

Could you please help me resolve this issue?

Tim

    Dear all, after several months of painful attempts, finally I found the way to solve the BSOD problem at my PRO-7 i5 16/256! Here is my experience.

    1. Any previous attempt to update Windows using the Windows Update settings menu or Windows 10 Update Assistant app failed in process with BSOD;
    2. I had to use a USB flash drive to make a reset to factory settings. I boot from USB pushed the volume down button, and re-installed the system (all data needs to be back up in external drivers, all internal drive data will be lost). Not from the very first attempt due to the same BSODs, but I managed to do that successfully. The fresh system was also not stable with BSODs. USB recovery image can be downloaded here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surfacerecoveryimage
    3. At the fresh Windows 10 I used Intel® Driver & Support Assistant to update all drivers, including graphics, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. The tool can be downloaded here: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28425/Intel-Driver-Support-Assistant;
    4. Also had installed both SurfacePro7_Win10_17763_20.020.2886.0.msi and SurfacePro7_Win10_18362_20.072.23016.0.msi Microsoft update packs from here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=100419
    5. All updates available in Settings/menu were applied step by step up to Windows 1909 version. Current OS build is 18363.1049. All other third-party software I need to use also were installed.

    With this setup, I’m happy to have no BSOD for a week of 24/7 usage!

    The system is very stable in any internal/external display configuration. The only thing is losing the Internet connection after the sleep mode – need to re-connect Wi-Fi each time. But it doesn’t bother me too much.

    PS For the moment, seems like Windows 2004 is also available in the Update settings, I have not tried it yet.

    Your problem same with me, random BSOD really annoying. I just got 1 month warranty end soon (11 month with no SP7 to use for work very detrimental). It's make me very disappointed to Microsoft to sell bad line product like this, although i really like this SP7 feel to use.

    But i still hope they give us solution as greatest company in technology and not be silent coz Covid situation until our warranty end...

    Hello,

    I'm also experiencing the same issues since I updated to Surface firmware 8.124.140.0 which released on Sept 29, 2020. And I can't share you how I got mine fixed because it's still happening and Microsoft Support couldn't helped at all. But I can finally able to reduce the BOSD times to like every 10~15mins to only 3~5 times a day. I know it's still pretty bad but I will share my methods in case there's someone like me too.

    Firstly, I'm pretty sure this is happening due to Graphics Drivers as well as Thermal Management. I got different stop codes and doing SFC Scan, Mem Check or SSD Check will not do any help at all - though doing those scans won't harm either.

    I was using Intel DCH Graphic Drivers from Intel Driver & Assistant Software & I'd not recommend using that Intel DCH Driver if you're about to install major updates like system firmware. I believe this is why my Surface got serious BSODs after update, even though previous firmware updates didn't do any harms.

    Here's is my methods to reduce the BSODs.

    (1) Grab a Memory Stick (min 16GB), format as NTFS and prepare as Recovery Drive (you can search it up how to do it)

    (2) Go to Settings - Reset and Recover the Windows from that USB Drive.

    (3) On fresh Windows - don't install any Windows update yet. Go Download the Surface Firmware & Drivers package from Microsoft website.

    (4) Install only one package that is suited for your Windows version (I installed the 600MB latest one)

    (5) Restart & update the rest via Windows Update.

    (6) Try using it as usual and check if there's any BSOD happening.

    (7) Open Intel Graphic Commend Center (Install from MS Store if it's not yet installed) and go to System - Power & Turn Off Panel Auto Refresh and test again. (I'm mixed with this but I am getting less BSOD with this turned on *EXCEPT VIDEO PLAYBACKS)

    That's all I did. But my Surface got pretty warm up easily after firmware update and it's causing BSOD when its start to run hot or Memory/CPU usage is high (I'm had to use only 60% of my typical usage to limit power). If you're getting too much BSODs and Surface is running hot, just turn off and let it cool down first.

    And also, maybe do not use excessively with plugged in - I also get more BSODs with using while plugged in than on Battery.

    P.S : I've seen and followed the instructions that Intel DCH drivers are more stable and cause less BSODs. But in my case, using normal Intel Graphic Driver (update via Device Manager) is more stable than Intel DCH ones. And those Intel DCH drivers being installed are the only thing I did change before I update this system firmware and caused this mess.

    So, I really do hope Microsoft would allow Surface System Firmware rollback or coming System Update will fix this problem. For now, I can't even contact to MS Support via Chat and trying to get a replacement unit from a country that ain't US seems like an impossible thing. Just $900 is completely wasted.

    forgive my grammar as I'm not a native.
