I bought Surface Pro 2 recently. It is a brand new computer. All I have done is to use it doing homework, watching videos.

But it happened several time recently, I am doing nothing, just letting it on.  it suddenly crashed and let me search for  "driver_irql_not_less_or_equal (mwlu97w8x64.sys)". what does this mean?

Hi allenyw80,

Thank you for the reply. I understand you are having the same issue on your replacement device and I know this is a frustrating situation for you. I'm here to guide you in the right direction.

Please try the following:

  1. Back up your files.
  2. Do a reset.
  3. Go to Charms>Settings>PC settings>One Drive>Sync Settings>Turn off Sync your settings on this PC. This step will isolate the settings from other computers that might affect your Pro 2.
  4. Install all updates.
  5. Install your apps back one by one to see if the problem comes back with certain apps.
  6. If the problem continues, please contact our Support.

Best Regards,

Clare

    Hello All

I do have the same problem with my surface pro with win8.1. I have teh screen maybe two, three times a week. I have re-installed every thing one time and this is the second time that I do have the same problem. Mostly I have this problem when I am watching some videos on Youtube. But I have the problem at other times as well. When I am writing something in Ms Word, When I am downloading something, ....

I really don't know how to solve the problem. Please let me know what should I do as I don't know if my warranty time has expired or now. But I can say that I bought this in 2014 at a local Bestbuy.

Since the Windows 8.1 August update which contained an updated network driver, I haven't had another BSOD.  The driver version in the latest update is 14.69.24054.176 dated May 23, 2014.  I'm interested if this has helped others.

I can confirm that I have those drivers above and yet I experience daily BSOD's from the mwlu97w8x64.sys driver.

Sorry for the late reply. I just haven't had time to do this. It is really inconvenient because I have to reinstall office and adobe creative suite which always is annoying because of the licenses. I also have little confidence that this will work because I did all of these things with my previous Surface Pro 2 and none of it fixed the problem. That's how I ended up with this replacement SP2.

I've been doing what DanielKitchen suggested and just shutting off WiFi when I'm trying to get real work done. I am having the exact same problem as "DanielKitchen" in that this crash only happens when I'm connected to my school/work's network. I think this is the best lead we have for finding the solution to this. I think its ridiculous that a device sold to students and people who want to get "real work done" can't reliable connect to the wireless networks of major universities.

I can totally understand your frustrations because I have experienced them too.  If I were you I would read through all of these post and decide on what works best for me. Don't expect Microsoft to do anything because it has been a while now with this problem and nothing has been done.

For me it had something to do with my schools network because it only happened when I was on that particular network.  I would be using Microsoft Word typing a document and it would crash before the auto save. Extremely frustrating!  I decided to turn off my Wi-Fi connection when typing documents however I have not had a problem yet this semester.

I'm sure this is not much help but is the best I can do for you.

    Cheers,

    Daniel
