Surface Dock Keeps Disconnecting Intermittently

Microsoft,

What is going on with this thing?

I have had the Surface Dock for two months now. Purchased it to go with my Surface Laptop 1.

Every day.... and I mean every day, this thing disconnects itself from my Surface Laptop, my monitor goes black, my usb peripherals disconnect, and my network goes down... and then in one second everything magically reconnects.

Sometimes it only happens 5 times a day. Other days it happens like a gazillion.

Once it first started happening, I scoured the internet looking for a solution. I replaced the dock, I updated the firmware, I connected it to a different power source, I've power cycled, I've turned the cord around - etc. No matter what I do it keeps happening.

And there is no good answers on this message board that seems to fix this issue. I have read them all.

What is going on with this thing?

Right now, just so y'all know, this thing is only acting as a power source for my laptop. I am plugging the monitor directly into the Surface Laptop, I have upgraded to a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and my Ethernet is going into the system over usb. Even with NOTHING else plugged into the Surface Dock.... nothing. Just power. It is STILL disconnecting and reconnecting intermittently. What the H?!?

This is unacceptable and you guys really need to figure out a solution for this. My boss has a Surface Book 1 and he also experiences these issues daily, as well. Since he's using dual monitors, he just puts up with them going out and turning back on five to twenty times a day. The only ones in the office with the dock that aren't experiencing these issues are the two that have Surface Pro 4's...

What can we do to fix this? The Surface Dock is currently the most expensive laptop charger I've ever purchased (since that's all it seems to be decent at).

Sincerely,

Microsoft Enthusiast

yes, it seems to be both docks - it's possible that the weakness is on the laptop, but who knows.  Microsoft don't seem interested in doing anything to fix it or figure out what the problem is unfortunately.

I don't think their hardware business will last very long if they keep knocking out defective, bad quality hardware at premium prices.

Hi Nabiscuit, I have the same issue. Old Surface (3Pro), docking station (3Pro). With the last update of my Windows 10 suddenly and at random my surface drops all (!) connections, WLAN, Power, Keyboard, wireless mouse, an iphone which I have connected via cable to the docking station,..... and recovers after 1 or 2 seconds. I have not changed anything about the devices in the recent two or three years, no new router, no new keyboard, no new printer........

I started deploying the Surface line as an IT Administrator and I have seen this on EVERY dock I've deployed (all first gen, glad someone else tried the 2nd gen on this post cause that was my next step and happy I didn't waste the money since it didn't resolve the issue). Doesn't matter if it's a Surface Pro (Gen 4-7), Surface Laptop (1 and 2), or Surface Book (1 and 2). Ethernet is one that goes out on most often. The screen flickering periodically is another. I seem to get mine working okay as long as I leave the Surface Book open. If I close the lid, it disconnects and reconnects about every five seconds. When it does, the computer swaps from Ethernet to Wi-Fi, peripherals shutdown, audio moves from the dock to the Book. When it reconnects, Ethernet can be disabled for DAYS before it works again no matter how many power cycles on the dock and Book and the audio/mouse/keyboard keep jumping from the externals to the Book and back. Rather annoying when you're trying to attend a webinar or virtual conference and audio keeps dropping in and out and with the network swapping, having to leave and rejoin meetings because "Your network quality is poor".

I've updated the dock firmware, disconnected all peripherals and power cable from the dock to do a power drain, I've swapped the dock for spares in inventory, I've run every Windows update, cleaned the port with a soft brush, blown out the port with compressed air, changed the direction of the plug, and this thing still doesn't behave. One deployment is only a month into its usable life and screens flicker anywhere from 2-3 times per day and 20+ times per day. I've spent over $20,000 on these setups over the last couple of years and I'll be switching back to Dell if Microsoft can't get this figured out. There are WAY too many blogs along with numerous "Microsoft Answers" docs all reporting various issues with the dock. I can't believe Microsoft hasn't made it a top priority to resolve all of these issues.

    Same issue here.

Just got a brand new Surface Book 3 15 and Surface Dock 2. USB devices keep disconnecting. I used an external powered hub as well to make sure its not power related issue.

Nothing helps. Updates. Multiple Surface Book 3 15s. Same ****.

I run my own IT business, and need to use Windows for work, as well as some light gaming.

I also have their horrible Surface Headphones 2 that keep bugging out, disconnecting etc.

There is a reason why MacBook 16 costs what it costs. I have a 5 year old MacBook Pro 15 that hasnt giving me a single problem  in 5 years.

Microsoft does NOT make quality products. Garbage.

    SAME PROBLEM!!!!!

    Customer support is terrible!!!!

This was the absolute worst experience I have ever had with any customer support related interaction.

First let’s start with the problem.

Every day.... and I mean every day, my surface dock disconnects itself from my Surface Book, my monitor goes black, my usb peripherals disconnect, and my network goes down... and then in one second everything magically reconnects. I have two docks (work and home) and the problem persists at both locations.

Now to the customer support experience.

For starters, the Microsoft representative started the interaction pleasantly and seemed competent in her customer service abilities. As we progressed towards her problem comprehension and technical troubleshooting ability, she seemed completely inept and lacked any competency. After trying to explain the problem multiple times, she often went off on a tangent trying to create a problem that didn’t exist or point the blame on a third party device that I owned (wireless usb keyboard). I simply disconnected it and told her the problem still persists. At this point she seemed to just regurgitate whatever documents were in front of her without a tactful or thoughtful troubleshooting thought process. After trying to explain to her that the problem exists between the dock and the PC (driver/firmware/handshake issues), she has the gull to tell me that I seem to know what the problem is and what the solution is. She then asks me to confirm if I was requesting updated firmware for my devices. This is when I lost all patients. I replied, “I’m asking for your technical guidance to tell me based on the information I gave you leads to the road of updating these areas (driver/firmware/updates)?

At this point I requested another person or manager as had already wasted 1 hour and 10 mins spinning my wheels. After the manager wasn’t available, I lost my cool and she disconnected us.

Microsoft, I was on the fence about moving my systems to an Apple based home, but after this experience, I will definitely be leaving Microsoft. I have been team Microsoft my entire life but this one interaction has made me very sour and I will never give any more of my money to your company.
