Surface Pro 7 Freezing and Restarting

I've picked up this freezing issue within the last two weeks myself. It always happens when I'm on battery with onenote open and while connected to a WiDi adapter. Needs hard power button to restart. Happens around once a day, sometimes in the morning but sometimes it waits until the afternoon.

I wanted to post on this thread as I just purchased a Surface Pro 7 with i5, 8GB RAM and 128 GB Storage.

The issue reported here is annoying (and always happens working on battery, never with AC plugged in) and I've experienced since day one. I tried the following without any success:

• Recover windows keeping my files intact
• Fully recover windows, removing everything
• Disabled DPST using the scripts from here: https://github.com/orev/dpst-control
• Disabled hello login and bitlocker (I'm running Windows 10 Pro)
• Re-downloaded all latest firmware and windows updates
• Changed different Antivirus apps

After doing all the above, I still had the same annoying problem! Working with One Note and also IntelliJ, the screen went black, and I had to manually reboot. Sometimes, it just didn't went dark, the surface just rebooted by itself. 

The solution that is working flawlessly (not without sacrificing battery life) is to enable all Power Options and have my surface running on the High Performance setting. Since I did this, I stopped having the screen going dark, if I sleep my surface, all my work is perfectly kept and I can resume on turning it on, and as I mentioned before, the only drawback so far, is that my battery lasts (probably) approx 4 hrs (but I must say, I do programming too, so that may help to drain it).

Anyhow, to enable all the power options, you need to do the following:

1. Search for regedit
2. Right click and run as administrator
3. Search the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power
4. Change CSEnabled value from 1 to 0
5. Restart your computer
6. After restart, right click on the battery icon and select Windows Mobility Center
7. Select High Performance

After doing all this, I stopped having the freeze issue. So far, I've been running smoothly for 4 days now.

I had this issue with my 1st SP7 i5/128G.  The display was freezing for 2-10 sec randomly. I returned it. Got a replacement and I'm still having the same issue. I have reset/updated/reinstalled/made sure I have all the firmware drivers update but  with no success. The issue is still present randomly. It is very annoying and cannot use the SP7 for work for this reason. It is unproductive. I will possibly send it to get another replacement but I'm afraid that this won't be fixed. I've tried everything discussed for this problem with no success. Mine is doing this plugged or unplugged. If anybody has a solution that would be greatly appreciated. As I said, it is solely the display that seems to freeze. Microsoft please pull up your sleeve and resolve this issue that seems to affect so many users...

This issue seems to be tied to the display powersaving tech that Intel has called Panel Self Refresh, which may cause the display panel to not update in certain situations (though it's not good at figuring out what those situations are) to reduce power.

I've fixed it on my SP7 i5/8G/256G by installing the Intel Graphics Command Center from the Microsoft Store, opening it, going to System>Power>Panel Self Refresh and turning it off for both "On Battery" and "Plugged In".

Trying this now.  Will report back if this works.
