I was wondering if I have a defective unit. I have an i5 surface pro 3 and I only get about 4 hours of battery life playing YouTube videos at about 40 % brightness and about 5 hours of web browsing. The computer shuts off when I am just below 10 % battery left. What are you guys getting?

After consulting another forum, I found an alternative and effective solution. A simple shut down managed to fix 90% of my problems. Battery life in active use is back to 9hrs. And standby has improved, but not 100%. It last about a week on standby. However, I was told that leaving Chrome open during standby may lead to shortened standby. I'll be using it more and doing son more testing to see if this is the source of the remain 10% of my problems.

My screen brightness is set at just under 50%. I get 4 hours of battery life. It reaches 7% and within a few minutes the computer shuts down.
I have the i7.

You are correct. I get 4 hours of battery life with my i7. But if I recall, MS doesn't make a distinction. Blanket 8 or 9 hours for any unit. If they had, I may have gotten the i5.
I have the i3 model now and am getting six and a half hours with it. Been running it regular on battery to test it and that puppy is doing very, very well.
With both the i5 and i7 models throttled, you probably would have been better off just getting the i3 model. It is not throttled (actually, there is nothing to throttle) and doesn't overheat - as long as you don't install an antique game that is allergic to the maximum screen resolution of the tablet - then the fan kicks in.
Right now, all of my data has been transferred to the Pro 3 along with the primary programs I use and it is now my primary computer. Got a pair of Bose headphones (wired) to go with it and a 12" messenger bag to carry it and accessories around. Total cost, a little over $1,100 for everything and the tablet is working perfect.
I am consistently getting around 5 hours. I am not happy about this as I bought this device specifically to get to a single device and need long battery life. I didn't expect a full 9 but do expect 7-8 when doing typical things like email. Word, PowerPoint and web surfacing.
I have been keeping up to date on the firmware and drivers. Screen brightness is at 26% on battery and 60% on power. I have tried mot all of the suggested tweaks.
I have the i5 with 256 hard drive.
