Surface Pro 3 short battery life

I was wondering if I have a defective unit. I have an i5 surface pro 3 and I only get about 4 hours of battery life playing YouTube videos at about 40 % brightness and about 5 hours of web browsing.  The computer shuts off when I am just below 10 % battery left. What are you guys getting?

    My SP3 only lasts around 4.5 hours when I am browsing the internet and at around 50% brightness.

    My average CPU consumption during this activity is around 5-10%.

    Not enough activity for even the fan to be running.

    By browsing I mean, reading articles. Not even watching any videos or looking at graphic heavy sites.

    This problem has persisted since I brought the device, as you can see in the reports below

    Some important points:

    • I have the i5 256gb model.
    • All updates have been installed.
    • I have tried all the basic power management techniques and I am writing this after extensive self-help
    • I try to keep my software stack lean.
    • I already contacted Microsoft chat support and that was the most useless experience ever.

    I purchased the S3 Pro in November and have being experiencing low battery after maybe 1.5 to 2 hours max of usage. I ran a check using the windows powercfg command to generate a report which included the following error and warnings.

    Can you help me to determine if there is something I can do to resolve this problem?

    Hi,

    Just purchased a new Corei5 126gb Surface Pro3

    The battery is draining more than I was led to expect... In ten minutes of web browsing only with no other programs in the background I have lost 10% of my battery...

    In addition with the same usage the top right corner is already exceptionally hot!

    I assume there's is something wrong.. but what? Is there a way to find out if one program is running inappropriately in the background causing both problems. Task Manager says no.

    I experience the same when streaming videos on YouTube or using Netflix. I've never really officially timed it but it seems like it only lasts about 4 hours. I haven't tried video playback from a file locally on the device itself (without streaming). I think the majority of what I do on the Surface is web-based (streaming video or web surfing), so if using Wifi is what is draining the battery then maybe that is the source of our problems.

    Unless both of us have defective units... :-(

    Hi Jeff, 

    I am using Chrome 40.0.2214.28 beta-m (64-bit). 

    I was not using Chromecast, I was just plugged into a HDMI cable. 

    Are there other things that you could see from my usage that could be a batter killer? I will definitely try IE next time and see how that impacts things.
