My SP4 gets very hot and drains the battery very fast even though it is asleep. I found it very hot in its sleeve and down to 28% earlier today. Found it dead later in the afternoon. This is one of MANY issues this device has.
(My SP4 is not part of the insider program)

We recommend that you install this update to keep your Surface performing its best. You can get updates now by checking Settings> Update & security> Windows Update.
To confirm the updates are installed, check Settings> Update & security> Windows Update> Advanced options> View your update history.

Josh - I have the update installed. However, this has not changed the frequency with which the fan is running - in fact, it runs while the computer is booting and nearly constantly thereafter, even when the computer is not warm. It is loud and annoying in the extreme. I have tried turning on the passive cooling option rather than active, and reducing the maximum processor state to 50% (35% while plugged in) and the minimum to 5% for both battery and plugged in, and turning off the Windows Hello feature in Windows 10, all to no avail. I am on the verge of returning this thing - if it is even possible at this point. It did not exhibit this behavior when I first purchased the machine, the loud and constant fan began more than a month later.
For reference, I have an SP4, i5/8MB/512GB machine.
I have the same problem described in this thread. I just bought the i5/256 Surface Pro 4 a few weeks ago, and installed all updates on 2/22/2016. Today is the first time that I had it asleep in it's sleeve and just realized it was overheating with the battery drain issue. I just tried disabling the Fast Startup power option; so, I will wait and see if that truly helps.
I too love this machine! It's been awesome otherwise! Any help would be much appreciated.
Just purchased a base model fan-less SP4 after having months of intermittent issues with my SB (which seem to be somewhat resolved now.) This SP4 has been *flawless* right out of the box. I use both machines daily. But I think these newer models are a little more reliable. I would suggest anyone having severe issues to restore whole laptop, if that doesn't work, return it for a new one.
On my third unit (not including a surface book that I returned for an SP4), all of which have have same issues with fan constantly running, burning through ridiculous amounts of battery while supposedly sleeping, and failing to resurrect itself from a sleep. All updates have been installed and nothing seems to work. This is without a doubt the single most frustrating electronics experience I have ever had.
