As far as I can tell, by manually turning off the screen by shortly hitting the power button before closing the "lid" seems to avoid the issue. I have tried been consistent with this behavior and can't recall problems since then. Also, detaching/attaching
the power cord activates the screen hence Windows Hello. Make sure you always manually turn off the screen before storing the Surface.
I find it hard to believe it's a hardware issue though I'm obviously not a Microsoft engineer. Still, great if you can get a replacement, I'm starting to consider that option despite the burden of going through fresh installs and stuff.
It's annoying to see such an issue with an "intelligent" wake up system in 2016... Come on guys, you can do it!
