My SP4 gets very hot and drains the battery very fast even though it is asleep. I found it very hot in its sleeve and down to 28% earlier today. Found it dead later in the afternoon. This is one of MANY issues this device has.
(My SP4 is not part of the insider program)

We released an update on 2/17/2016 that addresses this issue.
We recommend that you install this update to keep your Surface performing its best. You can get updates now by checking Settings> Update & security> Windows Update.
To confirm the updates are installed, check Settings> Update & security> Windows Update> Advanced options> View your update history.

I am presuming the failed to install of the Microsoft driver update for Surface Management Engine, the 2nd update this machine did after buying it, plays a role here. Is there a way to get it to attempt this update again? Support seems to not know of one. Or is my installation of the full Surface pro 4 driver package from April 29 supposed to have made this moot? Right now it is my best angle.
The pen is not passive, it is bluetooth connected and uses a replaceable AAAA battery.
Interesting. I guess it was just a fluke it started working again. I just dug out the box and found in the manual how to open it. There I definitely a battery in there. More interesting is there was a shipping tab that needed to be removed. Now I'll have to spend more time getting to know my Surface Pen to find out what new functionality I just unlocked. Thank you! :)
Since replacing the machine, I've taken it to several similar meetings with no battery problem. (I did once have a pen problem, thinking it needed to be charged, and I didn't use the machine. When I got back into the office I researched how to charge the pen -- it is passive and doesn't need to be charged-- and realized I should have just tried some basic things -- lock/unlock the screen, put it to sleep, etc. -- as the pen worked fine when I got back to the office.)

So could I just ask what difference have you seen on the battery performance issue? Getting anywhere near the quoted 9 hours on this new machine?
My Surface is usually plugged in so I don't have much battery life data. The best example of the severity of the problem for me was that I charged it overnight, put it to sleep, unplugged it and drove 20 minutes to an appointment. When I got there, it wouldn't wake up, it was so dead it wouldn't even tell me the batter was low.

I hope some day soon to be able to rely more on the machine. It is pretty amazing but the experience definitely has me not feeling like I can rely on it yet.
