My SP4 gets very hot and drains the battery very fast even though it is asleep. I found it very hot in its sleeve and down to 28% earlier today. Found it dead later in the afternoon. This is one of MANY issues this device has.
(My SP4 is not part of the insider program)

We released an update on 2/17/2016 that addresses this issue.
We recommend that you install this update to keep your Surface performing its best. You can get updates now by checking Settings> Update & security> Windows Update.
To confirm the updates are installed, check Settings> Update & security> Windows Update> Advanced options> View your update history.

same here, Surface i5/256, latest updates are installed.
I was really happy to read that they apparently fixed the overheating/sleep mode/battery drain issue... Finally activated Windows Hello (which by the way works great), set the energy settings back to go into sleep mode instead of hibernate, to finally have the real tablet feeling on my Surface.... closed the keyboard cover. Three hours later: My Surface is burning!!! I open the cover, battery drained down to 30% and the fan is trying to do its best to get the temperature down.
I am really disappointed and angry that I switched from my Macbook Air to the Surface last year! And I will certainly not recommend any of my colleagues in my company, to switch to a Surface!
My Surface Pro 4 M3 version always had the issue where if I put it onto a sleep mode, it would run extremely hot and battery will drain. In other words, it never falls asleep (along with the screen not turning on after putting onto a sleep, really annoying takes like 2 minutes and 10 different power button pushes to turn on a screen).
I just did the latest update (Apr 18 2016 or something like that) but the issue still persists. This time it scared the **** out of me because I put it onto sleep mode yesterday night after fully charged, put it into a sleeve, woke up after 8 hours, and the sleeve was extremely burning hot so I took it out and the battery was about 20~25% or so.
This is a serious issue guys. Are you guys gonna act later when it seriously burns someone's house or a room? You guys can expect some serious massive lawsuit if you guys don't do something about this.
The machine seriously needs a critical follow-up update, a recall, or a free upgrade to Surface Pro 5 or something. This is so concerning.

I applied the April 2016 update on my SP4 (8/256/i5) this morning. Sadly, the overheating issue still remains. Back to hibernate. :(

While I have my surface pro 4 software update done, however my SP4 still suffered the over heating issues yesterday while in sleep mode. Normally when you closed the keyboard cover it will just go sleep and won't turn back on unless you push the power key, but yesterday for no reason it starts over heating with fans on full blast in my cover.
You know this will severely degrade the components life, such as CPU, Memory and battery. Not only that, there is a fire hazard should the battery explode under heat. I can't imagine you guys have no fix this issue yet, it's been close to mid cycle for this surface pro already. If you guys can't solve the problem, I strongly suggest you encourage Microsoft do a recall before anyone get seriously hurt or property damage and destruction.
