i5/256 Surface Pro 4 overheats and battery drains while 'sleeping'

Split from this thread.

My SP4 gets very hot and drains the battery very fast even though it is asleep. I found it very hot in its sleeve and down to 28% earlier today. Found it dead later in the afternoon. This is one of MANY issues this device has.

(My SP4 is not part of the insider program)

Hi All,

We released an update on 2/17/2016 that addresses this issue.

We recommend that you install this update to keep your Surface performing its best. You can get updates now by checking Settings> Update & security> Windows Update.

To confirm the updates are installed, check Settings> Update & security> Windows Update> Advanced options> View your update history.

Thanks,

Josh

Surface Pro 4 firmware update was released yesterday!!!! I am waiting for the battery to charge right now to install.  Here are the release notes:

    • Surface Embedded Controller Firmware (v103.899.256.0) adds battery charging enhancements and thermal tuning.
    • Surface Fingerprint Sensor driver update (v2.2.10.6) improves accuracy.
    • Wireless Network Controller and Bluetooth driver update (v15.68.9037.59) improves access point compatibility and throughput on 5Ghz networks.

Yes, I hadnt tried again since previous update. I usually just set it to sleep and leave on charge overnight, only tried once (before the update) switching off overnight but since the power drained I never tried again. Now if I am travelling I will keep switched off when not in use.

Another thing I noticed is that the microsoft solitaire pack really drains the battery. I often play this when on a break and it causes fan to come on full power and drains the battery almost 1% / min! For a simple card game (designed for Windows 10) this seems a bit extreme.

Tried switching off again last night and sure enough the battery drain while switched off is now fixed. This is a big help but still getting at least 50% drain while in sleep mode.

I hope this is sorted soon

That's interesting in that there has been no update for the Surface Pro 4 for firmware since December 2015.  The recent update was for previous Surface Pro models.
