i5/256 Surface Pro 4 overheats and battery drains while 'sleeping'

Split from this thread.

My SP4 gets very hot and drains the battery very fast even though it is asleep. I found it very hot in its sleeve and down to 28% earlier today. Found it dead later in the afternoon. This is one of MANY issues this device has.

(My SP4 is not part of the insider program)

Hi All,

We released an update on 2/17/2016 that addresses this issue.

We recommend that you install this update to keep your Surface performing its best. You can get updates now by checking Settings> Update & security> Windows Update.

To confirm the updates are installed, check Settings> Update & security> Windows Update> Advanced options> View your update history.

Thanks,

Josh

Three major issues related to power management now. Battery drain in sleep, battery drain from the type cover when powered off and black screen when waking up. We need an update soon, this is getting ridiculous having to jump through all these hoops to stop drain.

I to would like to get an update MS.  As I see it there are 2 major issues with sleep: excessive battery drain in sleep and black screen when sp4 awakens from sleep.  The black screen is clearly the most severe issue as a forced power down and reboot is required.  When I installed the latest video driver from Intel the black screen issue has not reoccurred.  Unfortunately this driver is not yet available from MS and I do not understand what the delay is?

MICROSOFT please communicate the status of these issues.  There is nothing more damaging to your reputation then stonewalling your client base.

Microsoft, When are you going to fix the power management (sleep) issues with the Surface Pro 4 / Surface Book?

Can we have a more specific timeframe on when we are to expect this issue to be fixed please? And can we have an update on progress? These devices are now almost 3 months old and they still don't operate to their basic design specification. I have kept this device past my return window in good faith, understanding that an update to fix this and other issues would follow shortly and yet we are seeing and hearing nothing on the progress.

Every Surface forum on the internet is discussing this issue, you have a lot of upset customers who can't use their expensive devices without a number of compromises. I don't want to disable connected standby or reduce the time to hibernate down to several minutes and remove the keyboard before hibernating or shutting down - yes this is what your customers are having to do to get thorough the day/night on battery with these devices.

Why is it taking so long to rectify these issues? Is it because the Microsoft / Intel engineers who can fix these issues are too busy working on the next iteration of their products?

It's not good practice to throw unfinished devices out there like this just to be ahead of the competition, it is doing you no favours and your customers are going to get fed up fast. If this level of aftercare is now the norm for customers buying premium products from Microsoft then I'll have to go spend my money elsewhere in future.

I have no doubt that if Microsoft as a company had brought a product or service from another company and that said product or service was not up to scratch you would not have been as patient as your Surface Pro / Book customers.

And Microsoft, please don't insult me by replying to this email and asking me if I have all the latest updates applied. You should know full well that none of the updates released so far fix the power management issues.

Microsoft do you hear all of us - we want to know what is going on and we want regular updates on progress.

    Thank you.

    Thanks for the tip.

I did shut down the unit with the power button. Close the lid does not shut down the system. It only put the unit to sleep.
