My SP4 gets very hot and drains the battery very fast even though it is asleep. I found it very hot in its sleeve and down to 28% earlier today. Found it dead later in the afternoon. This is one of MANY issues this device has.
(My SP4 is not part of the insider program)

We released an update on 2/17/2016 that addresses this issue.
We recommend that you install this update to keep your Surface performing its best. You can get updates now by checking Settings> Update & security> Windows Update.
To confirm the updates are installed, check Settings> Update & security> Windows Update> Advanced options> View your update history.

I don't know if this will apply to you, but I resolved the same problem on mine by using the power button instead of the cover to hibernate the device. I did quite a bit of experimenting and it seems the problem is definitely related to the lid close option. When I used the lid to shut off it drained around 5-10% overnight, with the power button near nothing. I think it is also important to make sure the Surface is completely off before closing it.
Seems to be software related for sure, hopefully this will be addressed in the elusive power management fix, assuming they are even aware of this problem...
I agree - there are way too many bugs with the hardware or software. I can't believe MS has not released an update to fix some of these since Dec. If this was Apple - the press and everyone else would be going crazy. They release fixes much faster and have less to fix. Seems like Apple is held at a higher standard.
I think the SP4 is a cool device, but my return period is next week and will have to return if some type of fix is not made. Bet they get a lot of returns then with the holiday return period ending soon. Really too bad, as I want to keep it, but way too many bugs to chance it.
My Surface Pro 4 (i5/ 8GB / 256GB SSD) has the same problem - battery drain even when the unit is off. It drains about 7% - 8% per day. I contacted Microsoft Support a few times and spent hours with support staffs for the past 3 weeks. I finally got a replacement last week. The replaced unit is having identical problem. I doubt this symptom can be resolved by firmware update. It could be hardware / component problem. Microsoft should admit this and recall units. If they keep on ignoring this, - "Surface" brand will soon be history!
Can Microsoft please give us an update on what is planned on this issue or what we need to do step by step please?
