i5/256 Surface Pro 4 overheats and battery drains while 'sleeping'

Split from this thread.

My SP4 gets very hot and drains the battery very fast even though it is asleep. I found it very hot in its sleeve and down to 28% earlier today. Found it dead later in the afternoon. This is one of MANY issues this device has.

(My SP4 is not part of the insider program)

Hi All,

We released an update on 2/17/2016 that addresses this issue.

We recommend that you install this update to keep your Surface performing its best. You can get updates now by checking Settings> Update & security> Windows Update.

To confirm the updates are installed, check Settings> Update & security> Windows Update> Advanced options> View your update history.

Thanks,

Josh

This is really terrible. Sleep mode basically does not work. In my case the fault is not from Hello because I simply didn't even have a way to configure it. The only solution seems to be to change the behavior when closing the lid/pressing the power button from "Sleep" to "Hibernate". It then takes ~30 seconds to log back in from hibernate which is not what I am used to in another machines but it's better than having your Surface "turned on" all the time.

While I think it's also a shame that MS released the SB and SP4 with these issues, they seem to be tackling the issues quite fast. I'm willing to give them a month or two to fix the power issues. They already fixed the Intel driver issue for many (not all) of us. I would definitely get an exchange, though, just to keep your one month return period running until they come up with the power fix, otherwise, you may be stuck with a device that you may not want later on.

They have fixed some issues but caused others.  My testing with the replacement device shows they actually caused the sleep battery drain issue with the 1511 and associated firmware update.

Yes, we are all experiencing this issue. Replacing the device won't help. Instead of going through all that trouble, set your system to hibernate only instead of sleep and use battery saver. That makes my SB last up to 8-9 hrs daily use, including Photoshop use.

I knew replacing the SP4 was not the solution but I had to go through the replacement process per Microsoft's request to make a point to them, which I did.

I actually shutdown and avoid sleep all together.  With fastart is takes less than 10 seconds to get back to operating.  Here's hoping for a quick solution.  Maybe it's time to contact the mainstream, non-tech press.  The Los Angeles Times consumer advocate might enjoy tackling this one.
