i5/256 Surface Pro 4 overheats and battery drains while 'sleeping'

Split from this thread.

My SP4 gets very hot and drains the battery very fast even though it is asleep. I found it very hot in its sleeve and down to 28% earlier today. Found it dead later in the afternoon. This is one of MANY issues this device has.

(My SP4 is not part of the insider program)

Hi All,

We released an update on 2/17/2016 that addresses this issue.

We recommend that you install this update to keep your Surface performing its best. You can get updates now by checking Settings> Update & security> Windows Update.

To confirm the updates are installed, check Settings> Update & security> Windows Update> Advanced options> View your update history.

Thanks,

Josh

True... I do not recommend anyone buying Surface Pro 4. Actually this was a fraud. They sell you a computer for more than 1,500 US$ and promise you will get 9 hrs battery life and now I get 2 or 3 at the most, and the battery drain while asleep... so one always has to charge again... Actually after 10 minutes the battery is already at 80%! this is outrageous. One cannot sell such crap products promising one thing and with such result...

I could not have said that any better!

I finally (after 6 months...) got the battery /standby issue fixed by exchanging the device.

But the scaling issue really bugs me as well. I am sure the whole resolution issue goes right down to the age old core of Windows and a time when external screens were rare let alone high resolutions. But as a consumer I really don't care why it is the case, I need tings to work without wasting time to even think about seemingly stupid issues which appear left right and center.

Luckily there are good alternatives such as the MacBook it is not perfect either but much more reliable. I still regret that I switched back to Windows last October...

Thanks for the honest feedback - its going back then.

This is ridiculous to say the least that years into the Ultrabook/Surface product and the company can't get their devices working - the need a real product manager that has a bazooka to get this stuff fixed internally and exterminate anyone that slows down progress. Another thing that annoyed me is plugging in a large external monitor at a lower resolution - 1920x1200 leads to a blurry display. Reading all kinds of **** as to why this is the case due to resolution, DPI , etc. just annoyed me.

The industrial design was really good - great form factor, functional keyboard, nice display, etc.

I guess I am ordering the MacBook 12" and not looking back. Apple devices just work. Peoples time is precious and frankly the hours wasted reading blogs/contacting helpdesks/etc. are far more valuable than the $1,000 spent on hardware.

I just bought a brand new Surface Pro 4 i5 and have the same issues.

Microsoft confirmed I have the latest drivers.

Do yourself a favor and return it to the store and buy something else. I've been fighting this issue off and on (more on than off) since the October release. Trust me when I say that even if reinstalling the drivers seems to fix things, the next time MS releases driver or firmware updates, your machine will break again. Unfortunately, MS support is about as useful as your local cable company's. If you go to them they'll tell you: a) it's not really an issue, b) they're working on a fix that will be released at some point, c) they've already fixed the issue so you must be doing something wrong, d) if you push hard enough they'll send you an untested refurb that is often worse than the unit you sent back. Get your money back while you still can.
