i5/256 Surface Pro 4 overheats and battery drains while 'sleeping'

Split from this thread.

My SP4 gets very hot and drains the battery very fast even though it is asleep. I found it very hot in its sleeve and down to 28% earlier today. Found it dead later in the afternoon. This is one of MANY issues this device has.

(My SP4 is not part of the insider program)

Hi All,

We released an update on 2/17/2016 that addresses this issue.

We recommend that you install this update to keep your Surface performing its best. You can get updates now by checking Settings> Update & security> Windows Update.

To confirm the updates are installed, check Settings> Update & security> Windows Update> Advanced options> View your update history.

Thanks,

Josh

Those wouldn't be deal breakers, and at this point I don't think I could get my money back if I could. So I'm trying to make this thing work as best I can. This is my first Surface device and the experience so far has not been pleasant.

Panos lied through his teeth in the keynote. Either that or he never actually touched a SP4 before the launch and the marketing department made it up for him to say.

Set your SP4 to hibernate after 10 minutes. Its about the only way to "fix" the sleep problem. Yes, it will mean you will not have notifications (connected sleep). Yes, it will mean about a 12 second wake-up time. Yes, it will mean that your OneNote button on the pen will not work. If any of those are deal-breakers, send it back to Microsoft and get a refund. Changing hardware will not fix the problem, this is a software issue and - if the SP3 roll out is any indication - it is unlikely to be fixed in the foreseeable future.

And for the record, I did do another reset and go through all the updates. There is no difference, although last night's CS session was a little better in that it was 1244 mW session consumed in an hour. I'm still waiting to hear from Microsoft about what sort of rate is typical?

    BIOS: 103.873.768 11/09/2015

    OS BUILD: 10586.11.amd64fre.the2_release.151112-1900

    PLATFORM ROLE: Mobile

Needless to say, I'm really frustrated with this device. I'm past the 14 day return window for Best Buy. Not sure if I could get it replaced with a new one, although I'm not sure that would make a difference. The fact that many others are seeing the same thing with similar numbers and percentages tells me I would just have the same problem if I got the device replaced. Not sure. Something tells me it's a hardware issue and Microsoft can't fix it.

For the amount of money one spends on such a device, they shouldn't have to deal with issues like this. Sure, I could just plug it in, dock it, or turn off Connected Standby, but that isn't the point. This is a glaring defect, one among many others (display driver crash, lock screen stops responding, touch screen becomes unresponsive, etc).

So I'm unsure of what to do at this point. Perhaps I'll talk to Best Buy over the weekend, although I'm not sure what would come out of that. I will more than likely write a review for Best Buy (although it's not their fault) and tell people to avoid purchasing this product during the holiday season.

That firmware update does help at all, still draining 1500mW per hour, which is terrible.
