surface book battery drain while shut down

I have been noticing that when I shutdown my surface book, when I power it on the next day the battery has drained some. If I leave it off for a couple of days it will drain down from 100% to around 85% or lower.

I disabled fast startup... and then just decided to disable hibernation altogether. That didn't help.

I have windows hello disabled, but that shouldn't matter anyway since I'm shutting it down, not sleeping.

Some searching and I found a general windows 10 issue with the "Intel Management Engine Interface" driver. Some say that v11 can cause this issue. One solution that I have seen suggested is to go into device manager and in the power management tab for this device uncheck the option that allows windows to power it down to save power. I tried that and it didn't help.

Others have suggested downgrading the driver from v11 to v9 or v10, but I don't know where to get v9 or v10 of this driver that is compatible with the surface book. Anyone know if one of the downloads on Intel's site would be compatible?

So, has anyone else noticed this issue and know of a fix?

    On my SurfaceBook i5/256/8/GPU model, I've been testing various battery drain states as well.  In my latest tests, I have "Fast Start" turned off, and I have been completely shutting down using the Start-Power-Shutdown option.

    When my SB is docked to the keyboard and closed like a laptop, battery 2 (tablet) battery drains about 10% after 24 hours.  battery 1 (keyboard) drains about 5%.  This varies slightly each time I test.

    When my SB tablet is disconnected and sitting no where near the keyboard dock, battery 2 (tablet) went down 0%.  I forgot to check battery 1 after this scenario, but I will keep testing.

    But it sure looks like the theory of being connected to the keyboard has potential to being the issue.

    I'm curious how your testing goes after you had your battery drivers reinstalled.  If it helped, also curious where she downloaded and reinstalled those drivers from.  Thanks

    Tested again with the tablet detached from the keyboard.  Both batteries were 100% 24 hours ago, and after 24 hours of being shutdown and detached, both batteries are still at 100%

    There is definitely something wrong when the tablet is connected to the keyboard as that is when it drains the battery excessively, even when powered off.  Can this be fixed with an update or firmware, or is this a hardware issue?

    If you and I are running the same updates then there must be a difference in our hardware.  I have run the same test at least a dozen times.  My power options are totally at defaults.  I have changed nothing.  My Surface Book, i7/16GB/512GB, is a laptop and that is how I use it.  I use "sleep" during the workday and wake it up often using Windows Hello Face Recognition.  I sometimes go days without removing the clipboard portion.

    Before powering down for the night I check both batteries.  Both are at 100%.

    I power down by doing:  Windows/Start -> Power -> Shut Down.  I then remove the charger cable.  When there is no more activity and touching the touchpad does not light the keyboard, I close the lid.

    In the morning, before re-attaching the charger cable, I open the lid, power up and check the battery.  I'm most often at 100% and occasionally at 99%.  I most definitely do not have a power drain problem.

    I'm almost always connected to the keyboard.  You and I have something very different going on.

    Gary, can you share how many hours typically pass between you shutting down at night and then turning it back on in the morning? 

    I ran a test on mine last night, shut it down at 10pm when fully charged, then powered it back on at 7am.  So after 9 hours, the total battery was down to 99%, Battery 1 stayed at 100% and Battery 2 was at 97%.  Not near as bad of a battery drain as when I shut it down for 24 hours.

    So if you ever get a chance to let yours be shutdown for 24 hours, I wonder if you would see the larger battery drain many of us are seeing.

    Yup. you're right.  Something very different.  Many people have same issue this person does.  Fully charged, power down like normal. 100% full when powered down.  Wake up, power up. Now at 89-92% most of the time.  

    Says a lot about how pathetic this entire ordeal has been. .

    Well here are my results. I went into power management and set everything to hibernate. I also added hibernate to the shut down menu to make it easier. Last night I put the machine in hibernate mode, the batteries at the time were at 93% for the main and 100% for the secondary. I closed the lid, left it attached and left in on the table in case it woke up. I didn't want it to cook itself in case it came on.

    It did not come on and this afternoon, it was quite cool and comfortable. I hit the power button and it came on, quite quickly, and well the battery was the same as when I shut it down 12 hours ago. 93 and 100 percent. I had no other issues. So for me and I hope for others this solution works.

    I have gone back and set the other options to sleep when I close the lid as I never had the sleep issue. I use the hibernate mode I added to the power options to hibernate it. This is working. It really comes down to adding it to the power options and using hibernate instead of shut down. Weird. It is almost as if the two functions are reversed. Well this solution will work for me. As long as the machine is not using up battery and not coming on and cooking itself I can live with this.
