surface book battery drain while shut down

Split from this thread.

I have been noticing that when I shutdown my surface book, when I power it on the next day the battery has drained some. If I leave it off for a couple of days it will drain down from 100% to around 85% or lower.

I disabled fast startup... and then just decided to disable hibernation altogether. That didn't help.

I have windows hello disabled, but that shouldn't matter anyway since I'm shutting it down, not sleeping.

Some searching and I found a general windows 10 issue with the "Intel Management Engine Interface" driver. Some say that v11 can cause this issue. One solution that I have seen suggested is to go into device manager and in the power management tab for this device uncheck the option that allows windows to power it down to save power. I tried that and it didn't help.

Others have suggested downgrading the driver from v11 to v9 or v10, but I don't know where to get v9 or v10 of this driver that is compatible with the surface book. Anyone know if one of the downloads on Intel's site would be compatible?

So, has anyone else noticed this issue and know of a fix?

PR - Question: have you tried to take your SB into a MS Store to get it replaced? I'm hearing those efforts were quite successful over the year plus I've been monitoring these forums. Especially when done during its one year HW period, and especially if you have purchased extra protection through MS.

Also: Gary is a good guy. He has been very helpful over the past year and has offered a glimmer of hope to us who have had the worst of it. He has had his share of issues, too, though, which he has worked through. So give the guy some credit.

As for me, I sold my SB after 6 frustrating months (I was also an early adopter.) I purchased a fanless Core M base model SP4 and it has given me very few issues at all. I'm a happy camper! When SB2 comes out, needless to say, I won't be first in line again. I would consider upgrading to an SP5, however. MS has had years to iron our problems with that device.

    Take care,

    BB

The battery drains 5%  percent in 30 minutes while in sleep. I have done many sleep studies trying to figure it out but I finally decided it's not worth it and just gave up. I have been using hibernation instead.  We also have Dell, Lenovo all running windows, and Mac laptops, all of which you can just close yhe lid and put in a bag. Not with SB in sleep. I don't have abnormal battery drain after shutdown or Hibernation otherwise I would have thrown it away. It is not really a windows 10 problem, not as much as  hardware or firmware problems. While I think it's great that  MS is pushing for inmovation, It is out of my comprehension why they sell untested products. It is clear that MS is not as good a company making reliable hardware.

Yes, I too was very disappointed with the problems I had with my Surface Book in the beginning. I got the i7/16GB/512GB model and after buying the Microsoft Complete support package, a nice courier bag and a spare pen, I spent over $3,500 in the Microsoft Store that day.

My main problems in the beginning were the crashing Graphics Driver and Sleep/Hibernate being non-functional. I was also not pleased with how my touchpad was sensitive only on the left side for touch-tapping.

I've never had a problem with my USB ports. The caveat is that the only thing I've ever used USB for is my Windows 10 backups. I use a Seagate Backup Plus Portable Drive model SRD00F1 and it's worked flawlessly since the beginning. I do understand that the Surface Book USB ports deliver low power and have difficulty with peripherals that require higher power.

My Graphics Driver crashing was fixed last year and I've not had a problem since. My Sleep/Hibernate problem was solved with the June 20th update and I've not had a problem since. And my touchpad sensitivity problem was fixed with the Anniversary Update. At this point in time my Surface Book is running problem free.

I've never tried to see how much battery just the sleep portion uses as I could care less. While on battery, as long as I have enough battery to get me through a long workday when out of my office, I'm more than satisfied.

What kind of sleep battery drain are you experiencing? Can your Surface Book not get you through an entire workday using only battery power?

My SB  still drains way to much battery in sleep. I have all the updates and even tried reinstalling windows from scratch. I have also have very unstable USB connection. Early adopter or not you expect something costs over $2000 work properly. Microsoft should have recalled those SB that are not working properly, offer free repair or exchange. If the same thing happens to your car, you'd expect the manufacture to do that. But MS is too cheap, and probably too "big" to care a few "early adopters".

You managed to pick out a post I made 9 months ago for a comment? The state of the operating system has changed quite a bit from that time.

Nine months ago connected standby was not working the way it should and I was getting no battery drain while completely turned off. I had to totally shut down overnight back then because Sleep/Hibernate didn't work at all.

Since the June 20th update Sleep/Hibernate is working like it should and connected standby is working like it should. I no longer totally shut down and Sleep/Hibernate is now reliable. There is a small battery drain while sleeping, just as there should be during connected standby. At this point in time I can easily get through a work day when away from my office and on battery.

I'm sorry you are having problems. Being an early adopter, from the day the Surface Book was first released, I've gone through the same frustrations as everyone else. Today my Surface Book is finally working the way it should have when I first got it.

No, I don't work for Microsoft.
