Surface Pro 2017 Backlight Bleed

Well, I know it sounds like I'm a masochist if I severely criticize a company and still purchase 3 super-expensive laptops from it. We have three units in the family, meaning - me, my wife, and my mother. I "processed" all the three purchases myself, and they were made at my recommendation.

The thing is that I love the Surface concept and quality of hardware (apart from the backlight bleed thing) and at the same time I despise Microsoft's approach to certain quality concerns. Honestly? I would gladly replace Surface with something from Apple if it offered the OS compatibility and the same/very similar form factor. But I guess Apple isn't a copycat - good for them, bad for me.

While not being a critical issue, the backlight bleed is a serious slap in the face of the consumer. Microsoft is basically saying: "what? Backlight bleed? Oh, yeah... We did see that before making several million copies of those things, but you know what

• we don't care. Good luck replacing."

I understand the problem with people with severe screen bleeding problem (not my case, like stated above). I'm not sure what you mean with "family" having 3 of this devices, but if you go to a restaurant that serves you burned eggs, every single time you go there, even after a lot of clients complaining about it, but you still go there because you like the waitress, or the furniture and still ask for eggs, you can't keep complaining about the eggs... I can understand people saying they will never by from Microsoft again after buying one problematic surface, but I can't understand someone making the same thing 3 times and complaining... There are other options in the market (with their own problems, just not so famous like the Surface). Maybe when you say "family" you are referring to relatives you know, and not the same household, in that case, what I said does not apply.

It's about MS's approach to the issue, which basically consists in denying the problem. And the funny thing is that consumers have been reporting this problem since Surface Pro 3. So yeah, a company can f*** up, like anyone else, but if it refuses to admit it, and doesn't even care to rectify it throughout the subsequent iterations - that's really infuriating. Also the scale of the problem is mind-blowing. I don't know about Mac keyboards, but the light bleed can be seen in pretty much every Surface Pro copy, which isn't even a "quality CONTROL issue" anymore - it's QUALITY issue. They deliberately decided to reduce the quality below a level you can expect from a cheap Chinese tablet, and thought that we, as consumers, wouldn't mind. I've never heard of such an attitude from Apple.

We own three Surfaces in the family, and all three exhibit moderate (still intolerable to my eyes, though) to significant bleeding. This is only really noticeable in portrait mode when displaying content with white background = basically every time you read something on the web or take a note. Not a problem? If you're an ass willing to accept anything for $1500, sure.

This is such a difficult issue, given how the Surface CONCEPT is great (and innovative, and ), and how the device in general is great when it works. But it fails so often and in so many different areas that it really makes it a love-and-hate relationship (see my Never-ending Myriad of Bugs thread for reference).

I see everyone complaining because they paid for a premium device and all, and because of the premium price they should get a totally flawless equipment. But this is something that happens with all brands and all products. For instance the Macbook pro keyboard problems, etc... They don't explode like Samsung Note 7, and guess what, Samsung still is a good brand and they still sell A LOT of phones and tablets and whatever they do sell.

I saw photos and reports of some severe cases of screen bleeding, and I think MS should replace those devices, or you should return them I you still can. Because of all the reports you find in the internet (Surface Pro is a very popular device, so everyone talks a lot about it, more than most competitors) I found myself today, after a week with my new Surface Pro 2017 i5/8GB/256GB doing some tests. The first test didn't reveal any problem. Then, while I was chasing the problem, I found one basic website called deadpixelbuddy.com, with some images with different colors to see in full screen mode. After closing myself in a totally dark room, with my brightness set to maximum I noticed the bleeding near the volume and on/off button, and in one of the corners, only with a black background. I never noticed it before, because the tests weren't made with maximum brightness, something you never use in a totally dark room.

Bleeding is something almost every screen has, with different degrees, but if you only notice it in extreme conditions, don't make a big thing out of it. If you are always looking for defects you will find them. Spend your time enjoying this terrific piece of technology, not trying to find defects on it. This obviously doesn't apply to all of you that had severe cases of screen bleeding. I just think everyone is complaining, and a lot of those people don't have a real problem, because during 99,99% of the time they use the Surface Pro, they don't see any screen bleeding. SCREEN BLEEDING IS A NORMAL THING, it can be more or less noticeable.

I can confirm the backlight bleed, although I never had it to that extent as the photo on the front page post. 

And it has been there on all surface products I owned. I guess I was tiny bit more lucky to not have it that bad. I hope this backlight issue will be fixed though.
