I have the exact same issue happening with my pair that started several days after my 1 year warranty, if you still have yours I'd recommend you send it back other wise they tell you to pay 160 or so to fix a problem that might only cost 50. MIcrosoft won't be helpful for what seems like a fairly regular fault in their product at least from my experience
Rumbling/crackling sound on Surface Headphones 2 in left ear cup. But not if noise cancelling is set to "Ambient Sound Amplified"
So basically title. And I've tried factory resetting them and all that, but nothing, except doing the noise cancelling thing is on. Because of that maybe it's a software glitch or something wrong with the microphone.

Please follow these steps below to troubleshoot the issue on your Surface Headphones 2:
1: Check if the correct audio profile is selected
Click the Audio icon on your Taskbar (if Windows 10)
Select Headphones (Surface Headphones Stereo) if listening to music
Select Headset (Surface Headphones Hands-Free) if making phone calls
2: Check the Equalizer if it is changed to a setting that may caused the issue
Open the Surface Audio app then choose Equalizer
Under the Equalizer, try to change the preset to Flat
3: Restart the app or audio source
**** Close the application that is being used as the audio source on the host device and then open it again.
4: Try turning off the headphones then back on
5:Update your Surface Headphones 2

7: Pair with another device
Please try to pair the Surface Headphones with another host device and see if the issue still occurs
