Surface 3 charging issues

I'm sure the Surface 2 and other models suffered from this problem...

After getting my Surface 3 yesterday, I plugged it in as it was delivered with about 24% batter life. The little white light on the micro-USB charger than comes with the Surface lit up. I assumed all was well, and started the Windows Updates. It was taking a while so I left it and went to bed.

The next morning the Surface was off, and when I tried to switch it on the battery symbol appeared that indicates it had no juice. It was still plugged in to the charger and the plug was still lit.

I removed it a couple of times and eventually it must have started to charge as it allowed me to boot, and I could see it was charging.

However, whenever I plug it into any other USB port to charge it (such as on my PC), I get the "Plugged in, not charging" message).

I suspect a faulty micro-USB connector (a poor replacement for the old magnetic ones), but wanted to see if anyone elese was having trouble with either the supplied charger or charging from other USB ports.

Thanks for the update and sorry for the delay in following up.

I am reaching out to find out if your issue is now resolved and if not, I would like for you to please give the two button shutdown a try.

Here’s how:

Step 1:	Press and hold the power button on your Surface for 30 seconds and then release it.
Step 2:	Press and hold the volume-up button and the power button at the same time for at least 15 seconds and then release both. <br> <br><br>The screen may flash the Surface logo, but continue holding the buttons down for at least 15 seconds.
Step 3:	After you release the buttons, wait 10 seconds.
Step 4:	Press and release the power button to turn your Surface back on.

Once done, please proceed to fully charge the device and let us know your outcome.

what's more likely is that the USB ports that you've used can't provide enough power to charge the device.

If yes, your best option is to go to a physical retail Microsoft Store if you are near one in the US, and if not near a store https://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us/support/contact-us

I contacted MS and they helped me in this one. I had to do a current update. when this did not fix it I had to a a factory reset. then do the update battery life is now as expected.

In the message that I posted I tried to break this down into potential issues. Numbering them.

In relation to #3 you do not add anything. Unless the charger has an output of about 2.4A at 5V the S3 will charge very slowly. Leaving it off or in sleep mode it will charge even if it reports that it is not.

Thus my Mu UK plug folding tablet charger (you need a magnifying glass to read the tiny print) outputs as above. My Aukey Model PA12 (EU 2 pin plug) through the two Air Power ports also outputs 2.4A at 5V. Both work just fine all the time. However, my UK wall socket at 2A does not and that sometimes shows charge and sometimes not. However, it is actually charging. Just slowly. As I wrote, the icon status is misleading. See point #5.

In relation to point #4 and cables you are, bluntly, wrong if you are implying that the cable does not make a difference. The AWG of the cable used will throttle the charge irrespective of the output if it is inadequate. Others have written about this and they are correct.

Now, what would interest me is if any of you out there can assist with the following related point: the Aukey Model PA12 has a third USB output which is Quick Charge 2.0. The rating for that (you need a torch as well as a magnifying glass to even see the print on the side of the unit) is 5V/2A, 9V/2A, 12V/1.5A and 10W/18W (Max). The instructions for the unit state in the FAQ:-

Can I use the quick charge port to charge my devices which do not have Quick Charge tech?

A: Yes. You can use the charger to charge any devices with 5V/9V/12V output. However, the charging speed will not be as fast as the Quick Charge tech compatible devices.

Out of prudence, or cowardice, I have not used the Quick Charge port with the S3. Does anyone with technical expertise have knowledge of the position?

a. Is the S3 Quick Charge 2.0 enabled? The Qualcomm site would indicate not?

b. Either way, is it safe to use the Quick Charge Port with the S3?

c. If it is safe, would there be any advantage in doing so?
