Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

So Ctrl-Alt-Del did nothing for me (new i7/256/16 bought today). I tried to download the beta driver from Intel using the link above but it would always crash too soon. I may have found a possible workaround:

    • Boot a clean boot, login
    • Fast as possible, click Start, type Device Manager, hit ENTER
    • Expand Display Adapters
    • Right click the Iris 540 display adapter and manually update the device driver to be the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter

Device Manager replaced the horrible Intel Iris 540 driver with the MS Basic driver, and the crashes have stopped.

    Caveats:

    • I have NOT tried to sleep the device and wake it yet, but it was crashing every 2 minutes before guaranteed, and now hasn't crashed in 10+ minutes
    • I have NOT tried the Intel beta driver because I could not download it before the driver crashed. It is downloading now.

UPDATE: the driver change to MS Basic Display Adapter allowed me to download the beta listed above. I installed that beta driver manually, and immediately the driver crashed again. Again, the Intel beta driver above does NOT fix the problem! Install the MS Basic Display adapter driver and stay there until Intel fixes this!

As much as everyone is piling on Microsoft, this is not entirely their fault. In fact, the MS display driver works fine. I have not found a difference between the Intel and MS drivers; screen resolution is the same, but I have not tried gaming or anything intensive. But if it means I can do my work on the system, I'll sit on the MS driver until Intel gets their stuff together. (And shame on MS for not testing this well enough.)

UPDATED UPDATE: The Microsoft Basic Display Driver has not crashed all day. It seems to be the best option so far. On another issue, I was on the phone with MS support today, as the stylus has stopped working as a pen as well. The button on top works for launching Notes and such, but the point of the pen does NOTHING anymore. I believe it coincides with the update that also seems to have broken the display driver, but I can't confirm because I hadn't used the stylus in a while. Anyway support said they would send me a new pen, expected in about 8 days. I told him the pen was working fine until the software update, but he said this was a new version of the pen. I asked if the pens for sale in local stores were the updated version, and he said yes. I went to BestBuy tonight and bought the pen kit for $59.99 (I have a trip coming up Saturday and wanted to take the SP4), and after pairing, same problem, so the issue is likely software or both pens were the same older version. Also the webcams don't work. :(

    Hi All,

I face the same situation very often. I just found out that the good old Ctrl + Alt + Del does the trick. Let me know if that helps you.

    Cheers

Same issue, this is silly, why is Sleep, a basic feature of modern mobile computers, so difficult for Microsoft. Had the same issue with my SP2 which took MS months to finally fix (then break again with win 8.1 and win 10!!)

I have the same issue, I think that it is the driver also because you can actually sometimes get the touch keyboard to show up on an otherwise black screen. The display driver always crashes randomly also, so that makes sense. Does anyone have a fix other than turning off hello?

Have not used Hello yet sometimes keyboard lights up and no display. I power button 15 seconds and restart to get up and running.

    Win+P twice did not help.

    I Have not installed Hyper-V. i5/8/512.
