Surface Book 3 Overheating During Updates and Routine Downloads?

I have had my college assigned Surface Book 3 for a little over a month now. Immediately as I was transfering files to it, adding software and configuring WIFI, I noticed it was sluggish and not really exibiting the performance I expected coming from the 3rd generation Surface Book. In fact it was slower than my gen 1 Surface Book.

Over the first few weeks the laptop automatically went into hibernation mode a couple of times then seemed ok. Of late though it has been doing it a lot. I reviewed the Event Log and found that each time it seemed to shut down but was actually going into hibernation, the event log said it had overheated. No thermometer popped up on the screen as I expected it should.  I downloaded a program called Core Temp and it confirmed that it was running in the high 80C range and sometimes into the 90C range without much running in the foreground. I shut down unecessary services but that did not provide relief.

I contacted Microsoft Support and their determination was that I needed to wipe the drive and reinstall Windows and apps. I did not wipe the drive.

A little background now and this will help. I have it plugged into Surface Book Dock generation 1. A mouse, keyboard and 2 external monitors are connected to the dock. Surface Book 3 is supposed to work with gen 1 and 2 docks.

I then decided to remove the laptop from the dock and in a short period of time the processor core temps dropped into the 40C range! I began researching updating the dock and found this update https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=46703. I thought it weird that AMD64 was in the file name and that it did not specifially mention that it was for Dock version 1 but I installed it and the processor core temps dropped into the 40C range as they did when the laptop was not plugged into the dock. The laptop is also no longer sluggish plugged in and performs as it should as a laptop with 32gb of ram. We used HWiNFO to start creating logs. It's a surprisingly powerful little program and it's free. 

To be clear, we were only concerned about the thermals because I had gotten the little thermometer to pop up several times despite it not really being all that hot. 

If your experience is anything like mine, then a Microsoft rep should be getting in contact with you shortly.

I just received my laptop Microsoft Surface book 3 and I've experienced the same exact heating issue it get so hot it burns my lap in either mode it seems that Microsoft book 3 has issues in this area along with other issues I'm definitely sending this thing back I have not had it very long I'm not sure why there having issues with this thing overheating the way it is considering it over $2000 piece of equipment I'm astonished at this situation as well as customer service...

You would think as in Microsoft company a tech company they would at least be able to get their phone systems correct I am very ticked off I'm not sure if Dell is fully being informed of this situation and 2boo

Surface Book 3 13" is badly designed, MS did exactly the same mistake than the surface book 2  13".

The CPU/iGPU in the screen is passively cooled "fanless"

The result is if you doing long of CPU intensive application the computer overheat and throttle down.

I don't understand why they did that, the Surface Pro 7 and the Surface Book 3 15" with the same CPU got an active cooling...

I have been using my Surface Book 3 for teaching over the zoom. It hits the 100 degree-Celsius levels so easily.

It is frustrating how this laptop thermal throttles so frequently for everyday tasks. Coming from Surface Pro 4, and considering how much the specs of this device is much higher as compared to my surface pro 4, The SB3 performs so poorly. I think it is because of the Intel i7 1065g7 processor, as this processor is designed to thermal throttle at 100 degrees Celsius. It works at high temperatures and it has been a must for me to use an external fan pointed to the back of the screen for cooling.

SB3 has been frozen during the zoom meetings 2 times, that I had to hard reset it to make it work again. I paid almost $3000, and I am very unhappy with the thermals and performance. :(

My Surface Pro 4 even wouldn't freeze in a meeting, but it would get really hot as well, that was my reason to upgrade to SB3.

I really love the form factor and design, but this processor choice is so poor and I am really disappointed. I would rather have a thicker version, if that is what it takes, that has good thermal. Also, I would prefer a more powerful CPU with 8 cores. If you need to make the screen thicker for 2 fans, just do it. :) I want the performance and less versatile is ok as long as I have the great pen input display. Also upgrade that to 4k :).
