New Surface Dock Does Not Work via mini displayport to HDMI & DVI

The specific device I am referring to, is the new Surface Dock for Surface Pro 3/4 and Surface Book. I have described the issue here on Reddit, and a number of others are also experiencing the same problem. Basically, the new dock doesn't work when the monitor is connected using mini displayport to HDMI. The monitor is detected correctly and the correct resolution is set, but the screen remains black. In my case, I randomly get some image on the monitor, but it's compressed to one side of the screen and garbled. The mini displayport to HDMI adapter works properly when connected directly to the Surface, so the adapter itself is fine. If I instead connect the mini displayport to VGA adapter to the dock, the monitor displays correctly. I have tried using a straight mini displayport to DVI cable and the issue remains. Additionally, I have connected a Surface Pro 3 to the dock and experience the same issue.

So to summarize, the dock does not function correctly when using a mini displayport to HDMI adapter to connect the monitor, but does work with a mini displayport to VGA adapter. This problem is repeatable using both a Surface Book and Surface Pro 3.

I purchased an active mDP to HDMI adapter from Amazon (Plugable is the brand) and so far the external monitor is working correctly through the dock.

Moderator Edit (11/3/2015):  If you are using a passive MDP to DVI adapter and experiencing difficulties, you may need to switch to using an active adapter.

If you switched from a passive to active adapter and continue to experience difficulties using Surface Dock to display to external monitors please consider making some changes to your cabling: different lengths, different quality, different adapters, etc.  If adjusting your cabling fails to resolve please consider sharing the following:

  1. Make and model of external displays
  2. Make/model of adapters if present
  3. Make/model of cables

For more troubleshooting info and steps to confirm your Dock is updated, please view our Troubleshoot Surface Dock article.

Thank you,

Josh

I'm also having issue #1 with the Surface Dock. I've tried different cables, but maybe not the variety you have. I've also tried moving the Surface Dock ports box away from the Surface Dock power supply, moving the cables around just to make sure it's not EMI on the cable, because I realized of course that when I plug the cable directly into the monitor -  without the Surface Dock - it works, but the cable path is different.

About two weeks ago (before I had the Surface Dock) I did have a half-and-half issue with the Surface Book display sometimes. It would go into a storm at random times, often separated by hours where for a few seconds I'd have only half off a screen being displayed at a time, switching quickly between the two halves. I contacted Microsoft Support, and they were very helpful and walked me through a procedure to disable Hyper-V, which has worked around the problem although I guess it might not be really fixed yet. So, I just want to put on the table that the half-and-half problem could be related to Hyper-V.

Thanks, RMDEQ.  I've posted a new thread about my issues here:

I encourage anyone still experiencing this issue to use this thread.

This issue, or at least a similar one, was being discussed here:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/surfbook-surfdrivers/new-surface-dock-does-not-work-via-mini/c29b6e9f-5736-4040-9252-6bdedf3b13e0

The accepted answer is to use an "Active" Mini displayPort adapter, but this has not solved the issue for me (and many others in the thread), so I'm going to attempt to clearly document my specific issues here in a non-"answered" thread.

When I have my external display hooked into the new Surface Dock, I will experience intermittent disconnection or corruption issues.  They will manifest in one of three ways:

    1. The external display will go completely black for 1-3 seconds, then come back on
    2. The external display AND the Surface Book display will go completely black for 1-3 seconds, then come back on, sometimes moving windows I had on the external display onto my Book display in the process
    3. The external display will shimmer with multiple colors violently, the left and right halves of the screen will switch places, and the screen will remain in this completely unusable state until I disconnect and reconnect the Book from the dock

These issues will sometimes happen hours apart, or sometimes as little as 20 seconds apart.  It's very intermittent.

The monitor I'm using is an Acer S231HL.  I'm in an office and have access to a variety of replacement cords and parts, so I've tried the following to try and make absolutely sure that the problem is with the dock itself:

    • Attach monitor via DVI and passive MiniDP adapter to dock, this was my original connection that first showed issues 1 and 2
    • Replace DVI cable and adapter with identical set, the issue seemed to be resolved but came back the next day
    • Order an "active" MiniDP to HDMI adapter, attach to monitor via HDMI, issues 1 and 2 persisted
    • Tried flipping the dock connector to the reverse position, so the cord faced out towards the front of the keyboard instead of the back of the Book, this is when I first saw issue 3
    • Swap the monitor for another monitor with the same model number, I experienced issue 3 here as well
    • Swap the monitor for a different Acer display, a S240HL.  This monitor doesn't have an HDMI port, so I used the passive DVI adapter.  While the monitor seemed to realize that it had been attached, it never displayed a picture, and responded only with "no signal."

As far as I can tell, there is no issue when the displays are connected directly to the Surface Book, only when they run through the dock.  I've considered trying to exchange the dock at the Microsoft store, but numerous user accounts in the previously linked thread have indicated that an exchange has not solved the issue, which suggests it is a problem fundamentally endemic to the entire line, or hopefully with the Surface Book firmware.

I don't suspect there is an easy "fix" that I can make here, so my goal with this thread is to hopefully inspire Microsoft staff to reproduce the issue internally, figure out the issue, and release a software update to resolve it.  Assuming, that is, that it's something a software update can actually resolve, and it's not a hardware fault in the docks.
