Surface Pro 7 charger randomly stops working

I bought my Surface Pro 7 about 5 months ago and the charger has been giving me problems for about a month now. It only sometimes charges and it seems to be random when it does. I have to plug and unplug the charger multiple times in multiple outlets around the house in order for the Surface to recognize it, and when it does I have to leave it be because if I move it in any way, it stops charging again.

Please if anyone has had this problem or has anyone knows what I could do, it would be appreciated. Not sure if the problem is the charger but it is very frustrating since the device is brand new and I haven't even used it for a year.

Hi Patricia Candelario,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community and posting your inquiry.

To verify if it's a problem with the charger or the charging port, we suggest the following:

• Try a different Surface Charger and check if the issue is resolve.

• Clean the tip of the charger with a cloth, dirt might be blocking the connection.

• Try the current charger to a different Surface Device.

We recommend following the steps at What to do if your Surface power supply or charger doesn’t work and requesting service if needed.

Kind regards,

John Neil_J

Hi, I also have had my Surface Pro replaced after only four months and then a few months later the charging cord started acting up and not charging every time. I contacted customer service only to be hooked up with Badr Eddine S.  He opened a work order and then instead of just sending me a new cord, he tried to up sell me a more expensive cord, which I told him no because my Surface was still under warranty.  He then kept saying he would have to charge me for the cord until I sent him the bad one back and it would take 4-7 days to get it.  That doesn’t count weekend days.  I explained I was willing to pay for expedited shipping because I had no way to charge it and needed to use it.  Waiting that long to get the cord was unacceptable.  He said he couldn’t get it to me any quicker.  I asked to speak to a supervisor and he said that wouldn’t help because they have a policy they had to follow. I told him to forget it and I was going to just go online and do it that way without him and he had canceled my open order and it wouldn’t let me do anything.

I then went online and found a charging cord for a fourth of the cost and got it in a couple days and it works perfectly.  I also ordered a car charging cord for it for a few dollars and it came overnight so I could charge it in my car until I got the regular cord.

Aftermany weeks had passed, out of the blue I got an email from Badr wanting to know if I needed anymore help.  I sent him email after email telling him how much Microsoft and their customer service sucked.  He kept replying there was nothing he could do as he was following Microsoft’s policy.  Then a little over a week later I received another email telling me a cord had been shipped to me.  I will never purchase anything from Microsoft in the future.  I had switched from my regular laptop to the Surface and have been totally unhappy with it ever since.  The replacement they sent me won’t even do a print screen and I hate to deal with these people.  Too much money for such poor quality and extremely poor customer service.

Big tech intentionally designs their products to fail within a few years or at least after the warranty expires. Buy an aftermarket charger from Amazon and problem solved. Microsoft and Apple are among the many flagships that are sinking because they chose greed over customer satisfaction.

    Aftermarket Surface Pro 7 charger - Amazon.com
    Good reviews and 5k+ sold.

Their 'handling' of the widely known charging problem has essentially forced me to never purchase another Microsoft product again.

    Thanks.

I wish that was my only problem with the Surface Laptop 3.

I started having serious WiFi problems recently, and unless I"m 2 meters / 6 feet away from a router, the connection keeps being interrupted.

Wish I never bought it. Next one is back to good ol' Dell that never disappoints...

I have the exact same problem and this is the 3rd (!!) surface charger l have in 12 months of owning the device. Unbelievably disappointing and when l called the Surface support line they said it's an "unknown issue". Probably don't want to compensate the millions of Surface owners with the same problem. That is my first and last surface device for sure. So disappointing.
