Surface Book - keyboard and mouse freeze up

I notice this too.  I describe it as the display locking up.  Because if I leave something occasionally updating, like the task manager or performance monitor, then this program's window actually stops updating on screen while the keyboard and trackpad are frozen.

Also, I find it's somehow related to the trackpad because if I keep drawing circles on the track pad, it will stay frozen indefinitely.  Only when I stop touching the track pad for a second or two does the system become responsive and start updating the display again.  I also find that touching the touch screen (just drawing circles on the screen with my finger) seems to keep it locked up too.

Needless to say, the most popular remedies posted here don't work for me:

• press and hold volume up + power.  Doesn't help.
• detach and reattach the keyboard.  Doesn't help.

I think it's a bug in the display driver / compositor.  I say this because if I leave a YouTube video running (and it has to be at least partially actually visible, can't be minimized or covered by another window) then my keyboard/trackpad doesn't lock up.

Impractical workaround, but I sometimes do it when I'm desperate.  Unfortunately that eats up internet bandwidth and power.  :/

My theory is when it's constantly updating the display, it updates correctly, but when it doesn't have to update the display, it seems to spend too much time idling.  At first I thought it might have something to do with power management settings, but I haven't found any positive correlation with that.

I spent two weeks talking to Microsoft Technical Support about this issue and they weren't able to help me.  Yet it seems to obvious to me what's going on and that it's a bug of some kind related to the display updates and the input system.

Very frustrating.

Same problem here, and the 2-finger reset didn't work for me either.

However I did find something that may be the issue. Just before the freeze-up I would hear the Windows triple-bong sound, like when a new device is being connected or disconnected, then the freeze-up would happen. Only 3 peripherals were attached to my Surface Book at the time: Keyboard, Trackpad, and the Surface Pen. Because I didn't want my cats chewing on the pen (they chew on everything) I put it in my drawer away from the computer.

When I went into the Bluetooth settings screen and disconnected and unpaired the Pen, the problem stopped!!

It is 8:30am. Do you know where your Surface Pen is??

I'm sorry to hear about the issues you're experiencing.

What I would like you to try is what we call a 2-button shutdown, instructions below.

Step 1: As your Surface is powered on, press and hold the Power-button for 30 seconds.

Step 2: Press and hold the volume up-button and the power-button at the same time for atleast 15 seconds, then release both.

The Surface logotype might flash on the screen while performing this step, but just keep both buttons pressed for the 15 seconds.

Step 3: Wait for about 10 seconds after you released the buttons.

Step 4: Start your Surface again by pressing and releasing the Power-button.

Let me know if this solves your issue. 

I can confirm that this did not work.  It worked for a few hours but the problem came right back.  You can hear the sound over and over light you are detaching the screen and reattaching even though you didn't do anything.  Arg.
