Monitor stuck on displayport with 640x480

I fixed this issue with a dumb idea...

Hey all. I just got a Surface Dock 2 today to use with my SP7 which I have had for a long time. I immediately set it up and my monitor was stuck on 640x480 and the option to change resolution was greyed out. Tried everything, becoming super frustrated and eventually found this thread.

I tried everything suggested and it wouldn't work.

Unbelievably JUST before giving up, I switched my USB-C to HDMI cable that I had been using just fine through the side of surface pro 7 for 2 years straight...with a brand new [exactly the same] cable and it suddenly worked!

Because the initial cable worked just fine through the side of the SP7, it didn't even seem in the realms of possibility that it would have an issue with the dock...it makes no sense. But it all works just fine now.

I am yet to try with 2 monitors though. I am waiting on the second one to be delivered....wish me luck,

8/23/2021 Fix update:

Bought a new SL3 to connect with my Surface Dock one, and had the same use with the resolution being stuck. I am not technologically savvy but this fix worked for me.

This is an update to the previously described fix which included rolling back the intel driver. The previous links for the intel drivers are no longer working. I found an old MSI file from 8/2019 that worked for me (the previous one was from 11/2019).

Instructions:

Note: Prior to this I updated my surface dock firmware (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/update-your-surface-dock-58d8723e-eae8-5e8d-c295-f870f7703633) and cleared the cache (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/troubleshoot-connecting-surface-to-a-second-screen-bc8f5121-a4cb-cf0b-5770-2df7a66a3b28#bkmk_cleardisplaycache). If the second link download doesn't work, open it in a new window in your internet browser. I am not sure if these steps were part of the fix but wanted to include them.

1. Download the above MSI file.
2. Uninstall your current intel Iris graphics card in device manager (right-click the windows button and go to device manager - see screenshot).
3. Install the downloaded MSI file (I did not need to extract this, it just ran automatically).
4. Restart your computer.
5. Unplug your surface dock connections (power and displayport) and replug them in.

Created a Microsoft ticket on the 9th of June 2021 because of the 640x480 resolution problem with 24(!) Surface Pro 7 devices & Surface Dock 1 setups.

I said that the resolution is OK with an old HP E243 24" monitor with DisplayPort but only 640x480 with my HP E27q G4.

After 2 months of mail conversation & phone calls I receveid the following answer today:

My name is ****** and I am the new Microsoft Support agent who will be handling your case from now on.

As far as my understanding goes, multiple troubleshooting steps have been applied without any improvement in the behavior of the external monitor connected to your Surface device via Dock 1 and Mini Display to Display Port cables.

Moreover, according to the case notes, this issue only occurs with HP E27q G4 external monitors, and the connections work as intended with other monitor brands. Since the troubleshooting steps that ensure the Surface devices work fine have already been performed, my suggestion is to open a support ticket with HP, as we suspect there might be a compatibility issue between the two types of devices.

Looks like they realy don't want to help on this matter.

Realy disappointed in Microsoft and will never ever buy this **** anymore from them.

Spent nearly the whole working day trying to sort out this issue. I eventually had to roll back the display driver on my SL3 to 25.20.100.7101, and swap around my displayport connections several times until they came alive and in the correct resolution.

I have one 34" monitor on 3440 x 1440 and one older monitor 22" on 1680 x 1050. Both at max resolution now.
