Hi all.. Today after I updated my surface pro, my monitor is stuck in a 640x480 resolution. Which is no good with a 49 inch Samsung monitor. If I plug in the HDMI, it works, but, resolution is not that good like it was on the Displayport. Any tips or tricks to get it working again? For some reason it shows 'Flat Panel, 640x480' when using display port, but the samsung drivers when using HDMI.

I am using the surface dock as well. I tried the displayport of the monitor with other computers and it's working fine. Not with surface. Really need help with this one!

I agree. Very poor handling of this problem. I love many things about surface devices, but problems like this and the lack of support to resolve them make the surface line hard to take serious as a viable business solution. What a shame.

With that said, I did apply the retro driver install workaround when I first came across this thread last year and that did work for me. I thought I would mention it since that workaround seems to have been buried with time.

Yes, because MS rather banned me (my old account) for posting a link to the extracted version (for easy installation) rather than actually fixing the problem.

Not promoting the info/reply to the top for others' easy reference, but banned the account instead.

Granted, the people moderating this forum are probably different from those of the Surface team, and they had to follow the rules which disallow distributing software outside the official channel blah blah blah, but who would have thought the problem persists after a whole year?

Nobody comes now, even the volunteer moderators, it's all dead silence, I wonder if they're going to outright delete this thread from existence soon.

It's a lost cause. We've given up and won't be buying any more. Over 50% of the fleet we bought has issues and being replaced (not just for display issues, battery, keyboard connector, boot loops, RGB lines on screen), and the replacements have had other issues. They obviously know it's a bad device which is why the Pro 7+ was released. I'd love to hear whether 7+ is any better, but, won't be buying any.

it is not buried, it is simply to complicated for many users including myself. more than a year so many people struggle and can't use their devices as planned...and the fact that no microsoft official comments any more says everything.

Thought I might chime in here, as I had a this problem with an external Samsung wide screen. I don't know if this was already mentioned in this thread as I have not read most of it but for me it worked to just delete/deinstall the Monitor (which I think is a horrendous choice of words) and then just plug it back in. After that it worked. It might also be necessary to do a quick reboot.

Hope this might help some of you.

That's a separate issue, possibly poor connection of the Surface Connector, happens with all Surface devices AFAICT.

What we here are dealing with is a DRIVER issue, which was broken since the Jan/Feb 2020 update, approximately an year ago.

Just today, Microsoft pushed an display driver update which didn't fix the problem and broke my setup again. Fortunately, I have a backup of the old driver.

However, I'm seeing some other issues with regard to OpenGL, perhaps the new driver update can fix it, but if I'm going to be unable to use the external monitor, it's practically a no-go.

FWIW, a Microsoft staff came and said they're actively investigating it, like last March/April. Well, who would have thought that the COVID19 vaccines arrived before the fix! A fix which seemingly will not be coming whatsoever.

The Surface team is not just refusing to fix the problem, they're simply ignoring us.

    Very poor handling.
