My surface pro broke and will only shoot me into bios now?

Title basically says it. I've had the Surface Pro (128gb) for less than a week and I turned it on to do some math homework and it just, wouldn't boot. Sent me into bios. I had a similar problem with a Samsung ATIV Smart PC (intel atom). I booted from my USB recovery drive and it would appear that the SSD in the Surface does not even exist anymore. Trying to automatic repair just returned with a 'system drive not found' error. The orange light by the microSD slot also was blinking.

Here's a video of the orange light blinking:

Apparently this issue is slightly common with the surface, and is called the orange light of death. I have a two year warranty/plan and can get a replacement, but at this point with my bad luck with Windows 8 tablet (which I love Windows 8, btw [and use it on my desktop]), I may just take it all back and get an android tablet.

Anyways, any thoughts?

I have a funny feeling that there is no reference to the blink codes.

I do believe, however that it is an indicator that a machine is in sleep mode or hibernation.  If you cannot wake the machine up in a normal fashion, press and hold down the power button for about 15 to 20 seconds, release and then click the power button again.  That may start the machine back up.

I would highly recommend (it is up to you) to shut off sleep mode.  The Surface series tablets have not faired well with power management.  Just look throughout the forum and you will see hundreds of entries regarding it.

Every machine I have, I always shut off the sleep mode and when shutting a machine down, I never use the power button itself - just the normal log off/shut down via prompts.  By default the power button will put the machine in sleep mode and you can change that.

Now, that is totally up to you to do anything like that and if you do need the machine to stay on, just activate the "blank" screensaver.  Some people run fax/data modems and the machine needs to stay on for those.

My Surface had the exact same problem and this is how I resolved it

Step 1: Leave the surface off the charger for 10 minutes and then reconnect the charger for 1-2

hours

Step 2 -1-: If you have files you will have a certain amount of time to copy them to removable media

(You may need to start from Step 1 again).

Step 2 -2-: If you dont need the files boot the computer log in and go to your charmsbar or Windows + C and select settings, Change PC settings, update and recovery, Advanced start up

Step 3: (Your surface shall restart), Troubleshooting, Advanced, Then you can either Refresh Your PC (May not work) Or you can reset your pc when it has reset youre surface should work again.

This all happened on Sunday. I went on to the support website and looked around. It's pretty hard to find a real person to carry out support on a Sunday.

Answers;

  1. The system froze up on Sunday 15th June at approximately 10:05 local time UK.
  2. I carried out a hard power reset as described but when it rebooted it went into the AMI bios screen allowing me to alter the TPM settings etc. However it would not boot the SSD.
  3. The only recent change was the updates from the last patch Tuesday.
  4. It came with Windows 8 when purchased in April 2014 and was upgraded to Windows 8.1 the day I received it. At the time of failure it was Windows 8.1 update 1.

I did do desktop PC support for 10 years in an enterprise environment with 10,000 users. I then was an Exchange Admin for 4 years. So I would like to think I can figure it out. I did a look around support forums and the presence of an amber flashing light under the right side air grill pretty much convinced me there was a hardware error. I believe the SSD has failed preventing the system from booting.

I filled in a warranty request and the system has gone back for repair in the UK. I am pretty sure it's a hardware failure.

I hope by posting this I can help anyone else who has the same symptoms.

Steve

Hello Hyams

Does the tip of the charger light up when connected to your Surface Pro and plugged in?

Try this:

Hold Volume Up and the Power button for 10 seconds

Release buttons

Wait 5-10 seconds

Power on the Surface Pro

Let us know if this helps

Best regards

Hello,

Yes I did take a video. It will be provided in the YouTube link below. Anyways, I just wanted to say that I did contact a Microsoft tech over the phone and he told me it was just the motherboard blinking me, basically telling me that its working. He said its nothing to worry about and should contact them if I run into any issues with the tablet. Truth is, aside from the orange light, I've had no issues with the surface pro. Still confused about what the blinking light is trying to indicate, though.

Good to know.  Have you contacted Microsoft in the US, given how new this is they may be willing to do an exchange anyway, cant hurt to ask.  I know shipping the old one back won't be cheap but it's better than sitting around with a defective unit for possibly months.  Good luck!

it never worked. and as nwsailboat described it, it's exactly the same as mine.

I know the best solution is to bring it back to Microsoft store, but I am far away, so that's a difficult one.

Yeah, I'd already seen that page, I thought it would be helpful, but on closer inspection, it's about PixelSense/SUR40. At least, it seems that way from referring to a tabletop and a projector.
