Surface Pro 7 Slow WiFi

Hello everyone,

I am working with my new Surface Pro 7 i5 one or two days now and unfortunately, I still have severe wifi issues after installing all updates. Speed is between 0 and 1,250 kbit/s.

After searching for this issue, I found several entries describing this kind of problem and some workarounds like setting the MIMO Power Safe Mode to a different value. (as described here) I did all this but still, there is no improvement.

Any other suggestions on this? Is this a known bug? Is there a patch on its way? Is Microsoft working on this?

Any help is greatly appreaciated.

Thanks a lot

Tim

Unfortunately, it's not the testing package that is the issue for me. Nor is my problem one of a slower speed upon wake up.  I have a hardwired machine and three wifi enabled laptops. Only the surface tests out at 20MB/sec, all the others are a minimum of 240MB/sec up to 375MB/sec on the hardwired machine.

I can reset the router and I get a temporary speed increase on the surface up to 350Mb/sec plus, equally I can reset the router, or do a channel scan - in fact just about any poke of the network at the router or the surface will give me a temporary increase to maximum. But in some time - tens of minutes to maybe an hour or so the speed drops to 20MB/sec.

All of the other machines test out at the same speed over and over with no decrease to 20, only the surface runs slowly.

Other speed test packages confirm the issue.

Did you adjust the setting in the Sp7 driver? I think i posted a link a couple of months ago, this cured the problem on my SP7, at home i have a complete Unifi network with granular control, i had no further issues. Unfortunately im working in Saudi for the next few months and my SP7 is back in UK, but changing that setting meant i was getting internal speeds on wifi of around 550Mbps (measured using the wifi throughput test on unifi).

This cured the slow speeds from wakeup on the sp7 completely

The new Intel AX201 adapter has 2×2 MIMO (twice the number of antennas for 2 times the WLAN speed if the router supports it). If the Surface device goes into standby mode, the Dynamic SMPS feature deactivates one antenna and the other antenna goes into low power mode. The error, however, is that after waking the device from standby mode, the second antenna is no longer activated and the other antenna remains in low power mode. This results in greatly reduced speeds and higher latency.

    1. Go to the hardware manager -> network adapter -> Intel AX201 -> Advanced -> MIMO power save mode -> Change “Auto SMPS” to “No SMPS”. While this resulted in the bug occurring less frequently, only changing the setting to “Static SMPS” (-> disabling MIMO) eliminated the problem entirely for me.
    2. (Optional) Go to the Windows Settings App -> System -> Power & Sleep -> When my PC is asleep and on battery power, disconnect from network -> Change “Never” to “Always”

In the workaround, Auto SMPS is disabled for the WLAN adapter, turning off the power saving. This results in higher power consumption, but prevents the speed drop. The second workaround is from the Settings page, where the network connection settings are adjusted.

Yes, I reloaded the driver and changed the SMPS setting. Like every other time I touch something I got an immediate increase back to top speed and ten minutes (guess) later it was back down to 20-ish.   It's very frustrating, I keep thinking "Ah, that's done it", and a short while later I'm back to square one.

Actually I tried "no smps". Just tried "static" and got the usual immediate bump to full speed. Going to bed now but I'll check again in the morning. fingers crossed.
