Surface Pro 7 Slow WiFi

Hello everyone,

I am working with my new Surface Pro 7 i5 one or two days now and unfortunately, I still have severe wifi issues after installing all updates. Speed is between 0 and 1,250 kbit/s.

After searching for this issue, I found several entries describing this kind of problem and some workarounds like setting the MIMO Power Safe Mode to a different value. (as described here) I did all this but still, there is no improvement. 

Any other suggestions on this? Is this a known bug? Is there a patch on its way? Is Microsoft working on this?

Any help is greatly appreaciated.

    The new Intel AX201 adapter has 2×2 MIMO (twice the number of antennas for 2 times the WLAN speed if the router supports it). If the Surface device goes into standby mode, the Dynamic SMPS feature deactivates one antenna and the other antenna goes into low power mode. The error, however, is that after waking the device from standby mode, the second antenna is no longer activated and the other antenna remains in low power mode. This results in greatly reduced speeds and higher latency. 

    1. Go to the hardware manager -> network adapter -> Intel AX201 -> Advanced -> MIMO power save mode -> Change “Auto SMPS” to “No SMPS”. While this resulted in the bug occurring less frequently, only changing the setting to “Static SMPS” (-> disabling MIMO) eliminated the problem entirely for me.
    2. (Optional) Go to the Windows Settings App -> System -> Power & Sleep -> When my PC is asleep and on battery power, disconnect from network -> Change “Never” to “Always”

    In the workaround, Auto SMPS is disabled for the WLAN adapter, turning off the power saving. This results in higher power consumption, but prevents the speed drop. The second workaround is from the Settings page, where the network connection settings are adjusted.

    Want to chime in that I have the same issue and first identified it in the first day I owned mine because I was moving files from my network share to my new SP7. 

    Every time I use it I have to disconnect wifi, wait a few seconds, then reconnect to my Ubiquiti/Unifi brand network.   I still think on occasion its slowing down while in use.

    Anyway, if I don't do the above procedure I am stuck at around 15megabits/sec on my 480 megabit connection line of sight to an accesspoint.

    I am still in my return period.. I need a real solution before my return period ends or this is going back. I'm not dealing with this for the life of my product.

    I'd return it and repurchase to insure it is not hardware.

    Hi Crest_Z,

    I did all the steps you mentioned above and finally did reset my device but it is still slow. So next year it seems that I really have to contact support for replacement options… That's sad. But I want to thank you anyways for your help and support and of course, if other ideas pop up, please let me know.

    I've seen multiple reports of this and it is most likely a driver issue. Do you have this issue in all locations? Home versus a friends house or public wifi?
