Surface Pro 4 "Plugged in, Not Charging"

I have everything set on Window 10 1703 current build update from last night under power and sleep setting in the advanced platform in  "Balanced" setting on my power plan and set to NEVER on everything, it doesn't change a thing!

My setup is an SP4 on an SP3 dock with 3 additional monitors attached. I never had this issue before on my SP3 or my SP4 UNTIL I installed the Windows 10 Creator's Update. I had hoped that the Fall Creator's Update would have fixed it and I thought it had as it hasn't happened since I installed it last week. However, it just happened today and it's so annoying. I don't believe it has anything to do with the power adaptor. Even though it will start charging if I unplug the power from the wall or unplug the power from the dock, it even works after I undock and r-dock the SP4. Sometimes I even have to reboot first then undock\re-dock to get it to work again.

Can anyone else confirm it worked without issue prior to the Creator Update install?

I'm having a "84% charged, plugged in, not charging" issue as well, and just wanted to explain the symptoms and see if anyone else has the same issue as me, as most of the posts on this threat seem to suggest it sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't, whereas mine isn't working at all.

I have the Surface Pro 4, i7, 512gb, 16gb RAM pluuged into a Surface (Pro 4) Dock.  I have also tried the standard power lead which came with the Surface Pro 4.  My Surface Pro 4 will not power on unless it is plugged into the mains.  Once booted, if I unplug the mains cable the Surface Pro 4 dies immediately (doesn't shut down). It seems to be that the battery is completely drained and will never charge up.  I think this started happening last week.  I've been on the Creators Update for a few months now and it was working OK.  I installed the Fall update this weekend and this is when I noticed the problem, but I have a feeling it was playing up a week or so before this.  I just hadn't noticed as I usually have the mains power connected.

I have tried the following:

Microsoft Surface Diagnostic Tool

Microsoft Surface Batter Diagnostic Report

Removing Battery Driver from Device Manager and Installing Latest Driver Manually

Removing Battery Driver from Device Manager and Scanning for New Hardware

Cleaning Connectors and Port

Both Dock and Power Adapter Cleaning and Testing

Hard Re-boot

Mine is out of warranty and I called Microsoft who told me the would swap it out for a refurb for £400 (I'm in the UK).  The guy on the phone sudgetsed I at least try rebuiliding it to it's factory state to see if it is a software problem (as I have nothing to lose as they won't send me mine back to me if I send it back to them).

I'm happy to give this a shot, but will obvsiouly waste a few hours of my life.  I have up-to-date System Image Backups, but the guy on the phone actually said if I get send a clean machine, I should just re-install eveything in case there's an inherant problem in my backup image.

None of this gives me much confidence with the Surface anymore.  I really like the device, but have had so many problems with it.  It's bricked itself twice causing me to have to do a full restore from backup.  Each time I install a big update, stuff stops working (and lots of people seem to be having the same problems as me).  The Fall Update has definately broken Windows Hello, and the Screen Flickers in the top right-hand corner on the login screen.

I'm also a bit reluclant to spend £400 on a swap-out which is only guaranteed for 90 days.  It battery issue seems this is a common problem with the Surface.  It's just not clear to me if it's a hardware or software problem.

Has anyone out there had the same symptoms as me and performed a factory image reinstall and got it working again?

Hi Chris, don't bother sending it in for replacing, waste of money.... I have the same model and specs as yours still under warranty and have sent it in for replacement three times and still having the same issue...I tried all the stated fixes Microsoft suggests and still no luck..only way to get the surface pro 4 to recharge again is remove it from the docking station and re install it or unplug the AC adapter and plug it back into the wall, but after it reaches full charge, the same issue starts once again after it reaches full charge four or five hours later..I have a surface pro 3 docking station and a surface pro 4 docking station, both have the same issue charges to full, then after 5 or 6 hours, states plugged in, not charging, discharging....going on for three plus month's now....Also have a Microsoft Designer keyboard and after connecting via Bluetooth for 15 minutes, the media keys stop function, it's definitely a software issue and is extremely annoying that Microsoft doesn't either run full testing on software before sending it out or fix consumer issues with current software....I believe it's a timing out issue in the software(creator update)......
