Surface Pro 4 "Plugged in, Not Charging"

So I did a search and found a lot of similar issues with the Pro 2, but nothing that really fits what I'm dealing with regarding my pro 4.

I've already swapped it out once before for this same issue, so I don't believe this is just a one off issue.

I have a Surface pro 4, i7, 256gb, 16gb RAM. I use the Surface pro 3 docking station with insert and have connected through the dock the following:a Single Dell 24" monitor off the displayport out of the docking station, Satellite/sub sound system, wireless keyboard, wired mouse, and a bluray drive. So that's the setup.

here is the issue. When ever I attempt to do anything that is somewhat power intensive, I get the  "Plugged in, Not Charging" issue. For instance if I play "Call of Duty: Heroes" which is a download from the app store it stops charging. Doesn't matter if I have the surfaced docked or connected directly to the supplied power cable.

The batter charges, it lasts 4-5 hrs when not on the charger. If I'm just doing word processing or watching a video, if I'm not compiling code, digital circuits, or playing a very very very low demand game it works just fine.

Anyone with a similar issue? Anyone able to get this resolved?

Here's what worked for me just now.

I've got a Surface Pro 4 i7/16GB  with the Microsoft Dock, and it stubbornly refused to charge.

I went into Device Manager, ![](https://learn-attachment.microsoft.com/api/attachments/1f924923-6af6-422b-8472-31c1b800abbc?platform=QnA and for each of the "Microsoft AC Adapter" and "Microsoft Surface ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" devices, I selected them, right-clicked, "Uninstall Device", then went to Action, Scan for Hardware Changes, and it re-appeared.  After doing that to each of them, my SP4 started charging again.  No reboot necessary.

    Hi Deke,

    Your problems sound like a royal pain in the ass for sure, but I don't think we have the same problem.  My battery will simply not charge at all, via any mechanism.  No amount of unplugging and re-plugging into either the dock or the mains directly will solve the problem.  As soon as I unplug the mains connector cable the Surface dies immediately.  It won't switch back on at all unless connected to the mains.

    My SP4 is experiencing almost exactly the same issue, having started last week some time! I don't use a docking station and have i5. The battery status is always 95% plugged in, not charging.

    Hi Andy,

    Thanks for taking the time to reply.  Do you have any thoughts on what you're going to try next?  Rebuild to factory image?  Or (assuming you're out of warranty) go for a swap-out?

    Hi Chris, don't bother sending it in for replacing, waste of money.... I have the same model and specs as yours still under warranty and have sent it in for replacement three times and still having the same issue...I tried all the stated fixes Microsoft suggests and still no luck..only way to get the surface pro 4 to recharge again is remove it from the docking station and re install it or unplug the AC adapter and plug it back into the wall, but after it reaches full charge, the same issue starts once again after it reaches full charge four or five hours later..I have a surface pro 3 docking station and a surface pro 4 docking station, both have the same issue charges to full, then after 5 or 6 hours, states plugged in, not charging, discharging....going on for three plus month's now....Also have a Microsoft Designer keyboard and after connecting via Bluetooth for 15 minutes, the media keys stop function, it's definitely a software issue and is extremely annoying that Microsoft doesn't either run full testing on software before sending it out or fix consumer issues with current software....I believe it's a timing out issue in the software(creator update)......
