I having the same problem hissing/pop sound. I like this earbuds very much. It's comfortable. The first earbuds I am able to use all day long with out much discomfort. I hope this can be fix with a firmware update. IF not, I will have to return it.
Hissing noise with new Microsoft Surface Earbuds
I'm an early adopter - got them on the day of release.
There appears to be a glaring issue, and I wonder whether they're particular to only my pair.
Basically, whenever there is about to be sound played - such as unlocking of the phone, start of a phone call or music, white noise hissing appears, sometimes with a "pop" and then lasts about 2-3 seconds after the sound stops. Even if no sound is played, quick locking or unlocking of the phone results in a 3 second noticeable white noise hissing sound.
Please advise. Does anyone else experience this issue?

2020-05-24T11:32:04+00:00 Same problem: As soon as the earbuds amplifier is on, this constant noise starts and is very annoying especially at low levels. Tried them with Surface Pro and Iphone, same result. It is in my knowledge a unique case (not happening with my Sennheiser Momentum or my Airpods Pro). It is a shame because apart from this problem, they are very good, very comfortable. I was ready to use them on a daily basis. I hope this issue can be fixed with a firmware update otherwise I do not want to use them with this background noise, it's not acceptable.

2020-05-22T02:27:38+00:00 I am an electronic engineer and have the exact same issue with my earbuds and this annoing hissing noise. As electronican I can tell that this sound should come from the amplifier that is in the earbuds. As soon as this amplifier is turned on, this hissing noise is there. It sounds like a bad calibrated amplifier.
I would accept this for a 50 dollar thing. But I will not accept this for 200 dollars. How can I get a replacement?
I agree, as $29 Anker ear buds seem to work just fine. Clearly there were glaring issues prior to release as this product seems poorly tested and half baked while being 6 months late. Bose is also about 6 months late with their latest ear buds.
Do you think this calibration issue is specific to certain units, or is this fixable with firmware update?

2020-05-15T15:13:08+00:00 I've notice that all I need to do to trigger it is to have the phone unlocked and press the home buttom - then pop-hiss x 4 seconds-pop, then all back to quiet.
Can't believe Microsoft released something this half baked to the market.
